Seed catalogs are showing up in our mailboxes; plans for our gardens are jotted down in garden journals; so it's time to think about what to plant for our 2021 Farmgirl Jubilee. This year's International Herb Society Herb of the Year is parsley. I have one flat leaf parsley plant so I would like to add another one.

As in passed years Farmgirls may choose to plant roses to celebrate the Jubilee. So many choices and so few pots to put them in.

New Farmgirls can read all about the Jubilee under the title Farmgirl Jubilee Annual Celebration.

Edited to say: the Herb of the Year is just an idea. If you do choose to plant an herb in celebration of our Farmgirl Jubilee any herb you want to plant is okay.

Parsley is a great choice. I need to plant some this year again, for drying and of course using fresh. Thanks Sara.

Michelle, my parsley plant is still green on back deck. Yesterday I used some of the leaves for baked turkey pasta. A hard freeze may get it but I'm hoping it makes it through the winter.

The yellow rose "Ron's Choice" that I planted last year for our Jubilee is blooming. It's getting harder to find yellow roses that can be grown in containers so don't know if I will be able to plant one this year.

I love yellow Rose's Sara! Reminds me of the song my mom used to play all the time, yellow rose of Texas. My dad was born and raised in Houston.:)
Parsley is a great choice and I need to buy another as most my potted plants died this year after I broke my wrist! Ready to get back into the garden saddle again tho!

Happy New Year everyone!!

I love parsley, and think it is a misunderstood herb! It is not just a garnish! I love flat leaf parsley and use it alot. It is pretty easy to grow and maintain, too.

Diana, hope this year finds you fit as a fiddle and working with your plants.

Nicole I prefer the flat leaf too. So far my parsley has survived our Texas heat and temps in the hi 20s.

Ruthie Ann, I'm with you I'm ready to play in the dirt/potting soil.

I ordered 3 different parsley seeds from Baker Heirloom Seeds that should arrive next week. Moss Curled Parsley, Giant of Italy, and Mitsuba or Japanese parsley. The one I'm excited about is the Mitsuba because it can be grown in full sun to partial shade, and boy do I have partial shade on my back deck.

I still have parsley growing in my garden!

I read that in folklore that parsley was added to plates to ward off evil spirits so people wouldn't be poisoned by them.

Deb I wonder if that's why parsley was first used as a garnish. Old folklore does play a part in why and how we do things.

Sara, I am going to try to grow some herbs this year. I think flat leaf parsley sounds terrific as the Herb of the Year 2021 for the Jubilee!

Dianna, my favorite flower is yellow roses! I lived in Groves, TX, which is a part of Port Arthur, TX - about an hour an a half from Houston. We grew up singing "The Yellow Rose of Texas." Small world!

I love curly leaf parsley and a little nibble after a meal will sweeten your breath, so maybe that is a good reason to use it as a garnish too. I am fond of Tabbouleh with mint and parsley. It is a middle-eastern grain and tomatoes dish, very tasty.Parsley, tomato, bulgur wheat grain, onion, olive oil, lemon juice, salt. I will be getting some started very soon.

I luv Parsley! it is such a universal Herb.. but more times then not, I just enjoy picking a sprig fresh from the garden and munching on it..
My mom uses to always have a small bunch of Parsley growing buy the back door, and when we lived in Apartments she, would have them on the window sill in a pot..

Parsley is one of my favorite herbs and the most used. I grow triple-curled parsley the most and dry it for use in cooking when I don't feel like going out and cutting it. I had some Italian parsley in my big tub of sage and it reseeded the next year. It's biennial and I think this is the year I have to plant more.

I like the parsley idea. Did you know there's a rooted variety? (Kind of like celery has a rooted variety and a stalk variety?) Maybe that's my new challenge: try to grow root and regular parsley. And there's a Japanese herb that's very similar in flavor and purpose that I think I'll grow too. Time to start my seeds and look for dishes for all of them.

Grace, munching is always a good thing ,and so is "feeling" herbs, and smelling your fingers.

Judith I ordered Italian parsley seeds. I'll have to remember to see if they reseed.

Nichelle, I've read about the rooted parsley so let us know how yours turns out. I ordered the Japanese seeds. It can grow in partial shade and boy do I have partial shade for it.

Hard to believe with all the snow on the ground and temps tonight in the single digits that in two weeks I can start preparing my containers for sowing the parsley seeds.

Hay there.

I had a little giggle at the term "feeling" herbs. I do that all the time with my lavender but never had a term for it. Thanks! Hugs.
