I don't have a farm - I consider myself an urban homesteader. Trying to turn every inch of my yard into a food producing garden. I enjoy canning, making my own - everything and getting back to a more natural way of life.

We're "stuck" in the city until my hubby retires. Which could be in the next 10 years. We have 2 girls, ages 9 & 5 who would love to live with more animals than the domestic kind we already have. My oldest has complained many times that they need to change the laws so we can have chickens & horses. We have room for chickens, not horses!

Welcome! Do you think you could get away with a couple of hens? They're usually quiet.

Welcome, Deb!! I love that you have created your own farm in the city. Such a good example for your neighbors. Have others caught on yet? I bet you could get away with a hen or two. They can be hidden quite easily. ;)
Glad you found us!!

OF COURSE, you can join us. Glad to have you. Where abouts in Chicago do you live? I'm heading up that way next week to visit my son -- he's downtown in a high rise apartment. Works for him, I suppose. Nice place to visit, but don't think I would want to live there!

I've tried to find a suitable exercise video for women my age...but they haven't made one called "Buns of Putty"

Welcome, Deb!

Glad we've got another City of Big Shoulders farmgirl among us. I hope that you'll consider joining the new Chicago Urban Farmgirls chapter - kitchensqueen is the chapter organizer. Are you in the city "proper" or another one of the 'burbs?

I'm about 40 miles due west of you. I've been here about four or six weeks. *LOVE* it!! So many helpful women, so many awesome topics, and more tips than I could ever hope to find on one site.

I certainly hope you enjoy your time here as much as I do. Be seeing you 'round! ~ Kaylyn

Thanks for such a warm welcome!

I'm not in the city proper - near west burbs. Can't have chickens - my elderly neighbors would complain.

Don't have anyone near us in the same mindset - with the exception of an elderly couple a few doors down. I envy them! They're from Europe and can and freeze everything from their yard. Start everything from seed that they have saved from each year. Have for well over 20 years (haven't bought a single plant since!) Haven't turned their furnace on for who knows how long - converted to wood burning stove. The husband rides his bike everywhere, they only take their car to church. The things I learn from them. I'm so thankful to have them for neighbors.

My girls have their own gardens. I think it is so important for children to have their own space to garden in. Anything goes in those spots. One year they chose pumpkin & watermelon to grow. They overtook the yard. We had so much fun with it. Measuring the vines each week.

Ok, I'm a chatty one today! Best get going. It's 25 degrees out today. Brrr. Can't garden today.....
