Today I planted three milkweed roots in round galvanized tub. First time to plant milkweed for monarch butterflies. Hope they do well and the butterflies find them.

Awesome Sara!! This week since our last freeze is gone, ill be planting milkweed, borage, calendula, and others. I'm so happy there are 2 milkweed plants showing greenery even afterthefreeze! Don't you love the little caterpillars???

Yes Dianna, Caterpillars are cute. Your garden will be full of all things good for butterflies and bees to munch on. Next to be sowed will be the okra and zinnias, maybe next week.

Mmmm, okra. Sara i hesitated about okra because so much went to waster last year but I decided this year I'd pickle them! Have you pickled yours???

I don't plant enough to pickle. Only one 4' long galvanized tub this year, enough okra for me to fry for breakfast. One of my favorite things to do is to pick okra early in the morning for breakfast with cottage fries.
I have had pickled okra and it is very tasty.

| I saw on Pioneers Woman's blog years ago where she cut okra length wise, sprinkled with s & p and ate raw. I tried it and it was pretty good! |

Lisa, just guessing but the okra would have to be teeny weeny. Years ago when I did a lot of wild crafting I let okra dry on the stalk and use it in arrangements.

I do like it raw also Lisa. But I found a recipe to pickle it and read HOW nutritious the seeds were too so I'm definitely growing it again this year!
Sara, have you tried the red heirloom version?? Yum!!

I planted it last year in two 4' tubs. I liked it fried and also with tomatoes.
Okra is akin to hibiscus, so it looks pretty with its large yellow blossoms.

Good luck with your plantings ladies. We are still covered in a foot of snow here. Enjoying any spring time warmth we get. I do have green peppers plants started. My jalapeno seed is not sprouting, so must be too old. We won't plant outside till the end of May.

Michelle it's hard for me to imagine a foot of snow this late in the year. To tell the truth I don't think I have ever seen a foot of snow in my part of Texas, would have to go to west Texas or the panhandle to see that much snow.

No planting here either. Still way too cold and snowy. Spring has decided to take a detour this year. I am getting really excited for when I can start planting. My garden is calling my name.

Hi Everyone
Hopefully we are past our frost here in East Texas. Many of my friends planted earlier and lost about everything due to frost. We waited and planted April 1st. Our potato starters were suppose to come in on the 7th but after we planted we went in to get a soda and USPS delivered a box with our starters. We planted corn, onions, carrots, Roma and cherry tomatos, pole beans and summer squash.

I have a few things coming up under the grow lights, tomatoes, and cabbage family plants. Shhh i did not label them when I planted so it will be a surprise, I guess. lol My green peppers are looking good and transplanted to bigger pots a week ago. We are forecasted warmer temps now, so hopefully that will melt out snow.

Oh My stars! went out to prune down the roses.. and I have a gazillion yellow Daffys coming up!
I also checked on my lavender plants, so far so good!

Today I sown the sunflower seeds that Karen gifted me. I checked on milkweed and garlic both are looking good. The oregano and Syrian oregano are coming along.

We have had a few day now of nice temps. Easter the fields were covered in snow,today it is almost gone. Lots of water running everywhere too.
Grace you seems to make good things happen when you cross your fingers. I may just ask you to do that at different times when we need dry weather for hay or rain. lol Cows, bees, chickens all enjoy the nice weather.

I still have snow on the ground but have lots of babies growing under the grow lights. I can’t wait to get my hands i the dirt.

Hi everyone I have not been on line for a bit, Life got in the way; but in a good way. I have enjoyed reading everyone's post. It is too early to plant anything here we had snow flurries yesterday. I can't start planting till the end of May. I have bought some flower seeds and after going to the grocery store and paying $6.00 for a little small jar of dried dill I told my husband that I will be planting some herbs this year to dry my own I was in such sticker shock by what I had to pay at the grocery store. I came home from work the other day and found that my hubby had made me a raised bed, so when the weather is ready I can be ready. I don't think Okra will grow here I am in zone 3. I like eating it I lived in the South for 8 years. Since we have such a short growing season, I usually buy my veggies and flowers already started. So wish me luck with the seeds I bought.

Oma sounds like you will be ready to go when it's planting time in Vermont. Your DH did good building you a raised bed.
I know what you mean about the high prices for dried herbs in the stores. This morning I made cornbread dressing with thick cut pork chops on top. I dried sage last fall so I had plenty for the dressing. Cornbread dressing is the only thing I use dried sage in. I prefer fresh sage in beans and other dishes.
