I haven't made cabbage rolls in fifty years, but I do like them, so I made them this morning. It will be another fifty years before I make them again. They are a lot of work. Even with prepping the cabbage leaves yesterday it took me several hours this morning (I am a tad slower than I used to be) to make the rolls and you should have seen the mess I made. They're finally in the oven and I am off to my rocker for a cup of hot tea and a good long rest.

I love cabbage rolls too and agree that they are a lot of work. I make cabbage roll casserole now; same ingredients but a lot faster and tastes the same.

Judith, they didn't turn out as good as I remembered them to be. The last time I had cabbage rolls a friend made them and they were really good.

I can't say I have ever made them; have eaten them and do like them, but hubby won't have it.
Last summer I found a recipe for a cabbage pizza that we both like. I'll try to find the recipe; I think it was a video, but basically the cabbage is the crust, mixed with an egg or 2, and spices. Let me see if I can find it.

I defrosted a pound of ground venison to make shepherds pie tonite. I'm thinking maybe I will only use half of it and make cabbage roll casserole with the other half tomorrow. Better to have two different meals than a lot of leftovers. I don't mind leftovers but DH isn't crazy about them.

Judith that sounds like a good plan to me. I may just have to try cabbage roll casserole. Would you please share your recipe. I like shepherd pie and one of these days I want to try making it with lamb.

Cabbage rolls, do not float my boat..........lol. Enjoy them though. My ma used to make boiled dinner, with cabbage and hamburger and carrots. Another meal I did not like. I know I am fussy. lol

Sara -- I don't use an "official" recipe but here is how I do it: Cook some rice (or use leftover). Brown the ground meat with a chopped onion. I precook the cabbage in the microwave until it is limp. Mix a big can of crushed tomatoes in the meat and onions. At this point you can get fancy if you want and layer the rice, cabbage, and meat. Or you can be lazy like I usually am and just mix it all together, grate some cheese on top, cover and cook at 350 for about 45 min. We like some caraway seeds in it too.
