                      | For my intermediate level of the Languages/Culture badge, I decided to research the artist, Michaelangelo. His full given name was Michaelangelo Buonarroti. He was born March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Italy and died at the age of 89 on February 18, 1564 in Rome, Italy. He became an artist apprentice at the age of 13 with the city of Florence's most prominent painter but left after 1 year, having nothing more to learn!
He became skilled as a sculptor, painter, architect and poet but always considered himself a sculptor first.
In 1498, he created The Pieta, carved from marble. He went on to create the famous David in 1501.
He was commissioned by Pope Julius II to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. He began in 1508 and it was finished in 1512. It consists of 47 scenes and more than 300 characters. I read once that he did not want to do this project but eventually decided to when the Pope gave him the job of painting the chapel ceiling as his penance! He returned more than a generation later to paint The Last Judgement. He worked at the Vatican in Rome on and off during the rest of his life.
After the Sistine Chapel, he took on many ambitious projects but rejected the idea of having any assistance...so most remained unfinished. Hhmm...sounds like myself at an earlier age!
He is considered to be an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art and the greatest living artist of his lifetime.

                      | Very Interesting Debbie I learned a great deal about Michaelangelo, I never knew or I forgot that he did not want to paint the ceiling the Sistine Chapel. But had to for his penance, so interesting. Thank you Debbie for sharing.

                      | Thank-you Debbie for sharing what you have learned about Michelangelo while working on your badge. He was quite the artist and inventor.
