Today I am planting 3 bunches of red onion sets in my large raised galvanized tub. One bunch down - two to go. Seems to me that the bunches are smaller than they were a couple of years ago and cost more.

Connie the last of the frozen snow on the galvanized tub melted yesterday and the frozen snow around it. All three bunches are planted and a chance of rain later today so I will see if it happens before I water the onions. Felt good to play in the dirt.

Just planted garlic, and our warm December weather has been very kind to them. Spouts are already a foot tall.

“Good clean garden dirt” as I tell my friends as we compare my hands with their shiny manicures! Love it!

Please post pictures when your onions and garlic start to show. It has been at or below zero in the mornings here and in the 20's or lower during the day. We have probably 4 inches of snow on the ground. I need to see what I have to look forward to! I planted my garlic in September and can't wait to see it in the spring. I have my garden beds planned out and I'm ready!

Andrea, I don't post pictures, but my garlic has been up since fall and so far, is surviving freezing temps at night. Planning what to grow and the beds is part of the fun of gardening.

So far fall onions and elephant garlic made it thru the polar blast SC had last week. I have them covered with frost cloth.
When I am outside tomorrow I'll get pictures

How exciting Sara. I am so ready to get started with my garden, but I still have a while before I can get out there. I am already planning out what I want this year!

Tara, hope your foot heals soon. Like you my garlic and onions are holding on, but they do look a little raggedly around the edges.

It's too early here to be doing any work out in the garden but look what I discovered now that the snow has melted:

My tulips seem to be confused! It's not time for them to be waking up yet.

Oh, Heather what a sweet surprise, I hope they bloom so you have a little bit of color in the flower bed.

The other day I cut back all the freeze damage on my garlic. Yesterday I checked on the garlic and they had grown about 1/2". I am hopeful I will have a good crop this year.

OK,, I have to laugh,, while you all are talking about garlic and daffodils poking their head out of the ground,, I have about 6' of snow,, with no ground in sight! lol!
But May is only 2 1/2 months away and then my crocus will be poking their heads out of the still partially frozen ground... lololol!

It is definitely encouraging to hear that the bulbs have started to make their appearance! I planted crocus, tulips and (my favorite) daffodils in fall, so I hope to see some of those soon!!! And I had grandiose plans this weekend to prune back my evergreens and treat some of my other shrubs with dormant oil…but we’ve had a series of storms coming through, too much snow and wind! Maybe next weekend…

Heather, I hope your tulips will survive any other cold winter weather that comes your way. It would be sad to see them die off.

I lost all my garlic to hard freezes and the red onions may or may not
make it. On the upside after I rework the garlic raised beds, I will plant 10 gladiolus bulbs in one and possibly basil in the other.

Since our nights will be no lower than 40s I moved my bay plant outdoors on the back deck. I pruned the bay back to keep it at a size I can move in & out. I gave the cuttings to the man who worked on my house. The only outside herb that survived the freezes is my sage plant. Will have to replace the rosemary and Greek oregano.

Of the 4 red potatoes I planted in the potato bag two of them are showing green leaves.

I bought two Boston ferns that are on my front porch. Starting to look like spring around here.
