Denise going outside right now even makes your eyelashes hurt. It was -27.8 when I got up this morning, with the windchill it put it about -50. I have 2 heat lamps in the chicken coop and my eggs have only froze once. I put straw bales along all 4 sides 2 high to help insulate it before this hit. Keith also put some on the roof to help. I used comb and wattle salve on everyone to help protect them a bit as well. I am so thankful we have a wood burning stove in our family room, it feels a little nicer sitting in front of it. We still have chores to do, so a lot of extra layers go on, although it doesn't take long before the cold penetrates all of them. Cabin fever hasn't set in yet, but I am sure that is coming for most people. No one ventures out to much in these cold temps. We are leaving for Texas in 10 days so I am busy preparing for that. I know they are having a cold snap right now, but it is a lot warmer there than here. Stay warm everyone.

A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

Oh Julie I can't even imagine having the windchill that cold. I'm sure it must bite right through those layers.
Texas will be nice break from all the cold. It will probably seem balmy to you. Lol. Enjoy it!

Brrrrrrr is right!! Julie that kind of cold is scary! We are having cold rain today and then the next week we will see a cold wave hang around with highs in the 50s and lows in the upper 20s. It will be quite a change for us but the cold weather will help kill off mosquitoes and parasites in the soil that pose lots of problems for agriculture and livestock animals. We had very few freezes and cold weather last year and we paid for it last Summer with awful mosquitoes, flies and other pests!

Stay warm everyone and I hope those that are up north in the worst of it, will make it safely through this frigid spell!

Quite cold for us this morning at 8 degrees. I let the dog out and I'm sure they must correct about the wind chill at -10. It is frigid. The hens are all warm in their coop. We fixed them up with heat and heated water. I know this isn't real cold to those who experience colder but it is quite a change for us here.

Much nicer today. The sun is shining, 17 degrees with the wind though they say it feels like 4. I never remember having a cold snap like this before. The kids left and it's even colder at their house.
They are telling us snow tomorrow night into Thursday afternoon. Definitely a different winter for us this year.

Wow! 20F at the moment. Time to bring out the summer clothes! LOL

It's been so cold in the past couple of weeks that the furnace vent has had huge chunk of ice forming underneath and now ice crystals on the house!

The ice crystals are actually a few inches deep. First time this has ever happened!

Carole,
Hope you are faring well! It is a doozie of a storm isn't it? I saw they have snow down into NC.
Not sure what the temps are there but the wind is really whipping here. It's supposed to get worse before it gets better here. Good day for quilting or something.

The sun is shinning and it's above freezing - it's a good day in northeast Texas.

It's presently 18 and snowing! Not sure how much snow we are expecting but the cold spell is coming back! Oh well!

Did anyone in the south get snow?

Stay warm everyone!

I'm not in the south but it is still snowing, blowing and it is 24 with a wind chill of 6. I'll be glad when the wind quits. Only time it's not good to be on a hill.

Well I for one am getting tired of listening to the wind and seeing all the drifting snow. Pipes froze at the kids house and also on our wood furnace. Forgot what it was like winters when I was growing up in upstate NY but it is starting to come back to me now. It's still pretty but only when you are looking at it. I think I am having a bit of cabin fever.

Ladies, I don't know how you do it!!! You are mentally strong! We have been down to 14. But we are now in the 40s, I suppose it got into the lower 50s today. I was busy driving my friend around and never even looked. Best of all, my friend Mr. Sun was here today. Julie you will need winter clothes, but the temps will be in the 30s-50s for the next ten days, day time temps.

On the subject of books and junk...today I picked up a scrap book of my mothers. It is 75 years old...a bit older than me. she had it when they were in California in 1942 and 1943 where my daddy was in the navy. Of course it is falling apart. Inside I found a newspaper clipping from October 15, 1943. (I was one week old!) It has a list of young men from Texas who were prisoners of the Japanese, five from Ft. Worth. So I think the clipping is from the Star Telegram, which my daddy always subscribed to. The best part is the story on the other side of the clipping. It is a war time story of the rescue of an Italian Admiral and his wife who were being held on a tiny island in the Mediterranian, that the Germans had Booby trapped with bombs and were guarding! It is a cute story with a successful rescue. The most interesting thing is the author, whom I'm sure you have heard of...John Steinbeck! He had telephoned his story to the New York Herald Tribune.

So when you are going through your junk...look! Never just toss it in the garbage. Treasures old and brittle may leave you with a smile.

Speaking of old and brittle, my step father have me a treasure years ago...but the very thin domed glass over the picture got broken. Of course pack rat Marilyn saved the picture. I was making a book for Triston and Baylee, as a Christmas gift. I decided to glue that picture into the back of their book. It was so old that chunks of the outside edge were breaking off...but I glued it all down. Now that picture of a little boy and girl with a Guardian Angel watching over them has a new home. I thought that since Baylee was born on my step fathers birthday, and she loves vintage things...she should have that little picture.

The wind has started up again. I guess we are in for freezing temps and icy roads. I was hoping to go out today but now I don't know if I want to chance it.

A short January thaw this year one day of almost 60 and now back into below freezing temperatures for at least another week. At least I have more time to make things. Oh! the sun is shinning for a few minutes. To many clouds for it last long. Have a great day everyone.
