Up around Levelland, Texas the grit of the sand would literally sand blast the paint off the cars. My parents were up there one day, after I married. So mid 60s, she said they had to pull over because they could not see to drive.
Some friends came to visit my husband and I long ago. We were talking about where we grew up. As it turned out he was from the pan handle too. He said that he and his siblings could not see their house from the road when the school bus dropped them off in the afternoon, during a sand storm. He said they held on to the fence, for stability and in order to find their way to the house.
His wife and my husband laughed at us...They really did not believe us!
Those haboo dust storms that they have had out in Arizona...They don't have anything on a West Texas dust storm.
I'm a sky watcher, always have been and always will be. Since I have lived with rolling hills and trees so long, it is an eye opener to go to West Texas and the pan handle because it is so flat, you can see for thirty or more miles and there are no trees!!!#128533;

Marilyn your stories are just like the ones the History Channel told. Men would tie a rope to themselves when they went to the barn to take care of their animals and milk. They would use the rope to find their way back to the house. Don't you know their wives lived in fear until they walked through that backdoor. When your life depends on what is left of your herd you have to do what you have to do to save what's left.

Another story they told were about a family coming home after a funeral. They were in several cars when the dust storm hit. It was so bad three of the men took their jackets off so their white shirts would show in the car lights and they walked in front of the cars to keep them on the road. How scary would that be?

The dust storm the program was about was the one that went from Colorado to Washington DC. Congress was in session debating a farm bill that would help the dust bowl farmers. The congressman for the bill didn't have the votes but he knew the dust storm was on it's way. He delayed the vote until the dust storm hit D.C. and when it did his bill passed.

It's 33 now - hi of 44 for the day. Down to 20 & 22 Sat & Sun.

Oh Sara, don't you love Texas winter teases. We are supposed to creep up to gradually from 33° where we are now...all the way to 73° on Friday before that long cold plunge into the cellar of icy cold temperatures again next weekend.
When I see pictures from the dust bowl era, they break my heart. No wonder they Put their few belongings, their dirty children and themselves,in their old jaloppy headed west.

About twenty years ago I bought a book for Julie for her birthday. What I did not realize at the time, was it was the second in a series of six or seven books about the early settlers in Minnesota. Long story short, I returned to the book store several times, read the series myself then gifted them to Julie and her family. They pass books around. I do not remember the name of the books, but the author had done extensive research, so they were based on facts.
Facts about building a soddy to live in. Blizzards, tying one end of a rope to the soddy and the other end to the barn they built right next to the soddy...because they could become lost and freeze to death of they turned loose of the rope.

I live in Minnesota and when I was a kid we had tons of snow and real life-threatening blizzards. We still have them.not as often, but if you are out in an open area it is still a threat. That said, our January weather has been very warm. 30s and 40s.. That is going to end tomorrow with below zero temps coming.

These make me think of the Little House Books when Laura wrote about her father tying a rope around himself to get back to the house from the barn when they were having a blizzard and he had to go care for the animals.

The day here has been rain and thunder, of which is rare here and it just poured a few minutes ago. It is crazy and up where the fires burned they have flash flood watches going, poor people.

Looking forward to.more blue sky.
Stay warm and dry everyone.
Hugs

50 now but slowly dropping to 25 by 4 a.m. Sunday morning. High chance of light snow later today. We are catching the tail-end of a wintery mix of rain and snow moving out of the west to the north.

Marilyn the snow stopped some time ago. Streets and sidewalks too warm so the snow didn't stick. Just a dusting showing on ground and my deck. Annie did like licking it but was ready to come in within minutes. By morning we'll have ice on the wet surfaces.

Our snow is melting but they are saying a mix of snow/sleet/rain for us tonight into tomorrow. Hoping it warms up so the roads won't be slick. Even yesterdays snow is melting with just big patches. It was slippery yesterday in the driveway and then turned to slushy later.

Woke to a calm but very cold morning. The wind has quieted down. Yesterday we were under a wind alert all day and the wind did howl. It's been years since I heard the wind howl.

Woke up to 9 degrees with a wind chill of -14. Not going out today.
So glad the guys have insulated overalls to wear under their coats. I think they will need face masks too. I also have a pair.
