Anyone reading any books to earn badges right now? I am currently reading Eleanor Roosevelt's autobiography. Crazy good! I am not a feminist by any stretch of the imagination, but I really enjoy her book... and would consider her a feminist! i have a couple others I have that I need to read, but am struggling to find time!!! |

I just found this thread ! Besides struggling through "Beef", I am also working on finishing "The Book of Awesome"...it's a MUCH quicker read! Shannon, I've heard lots of good things about Eleanor Roosevelt's autobiography! She was quite a woman! I'm not even close to being a feminist, either. I'm beginning to feel like the feminists are outnumbering the rest of us. |

I don't think that's true Debbie. They're just the loudest. |

Debbie I found your comment amusing - I agree - we are a dying breed!!! I also have "Woe Is I" thanks to you, the Blogging book, and something else going on.... but I don't remember which one! My daughter's goal for the year is to read 100 books this year... so far she has read 19, including Les Miserables. She is working on "The Tale of Two Cities" right now (she is not impressed). Oh to have that much time!!!! |

No kidding Shannon! I just read a fb post from Modern Mrs. Darcy - 17 Un-put-down-able books. I thought so many sounded good but I don't have the time! Right now I'm trying to get through The Broken Way by Ann Voskamp before I have to return it to the library but I'm only 3 chapters in and I've already had to renew it once! |

When you say "get through it" - is it a matter of not having time or is it not that interesting??
Do any of you read Janette Oke? She is probably my all time favorite author!!! Anyways, I just started one of her series - The Canadian West series... When Calls the Heart. It has been a loooong time since I've read a book just for fun!!! |

Lst night I finished "Woe is I" - for a grammar book, it was pretty good, and the author had a decent sense of humor... for a grammar book ;) I still need to finish Eleanor Roosevelt's autobiography, which surprises me in that I find it interesting, but I am just not enthralled by it. It may have to do with her feminist ways... |

Somehow I missed your question about The Broken Way before. I've read One Thousand Gifts and I have The Greatest Gift from Ann Voskamp. I really enjoy her writing... usually. For some reason I just can't get into this one. I think I'm just not in the mood for this kind of book. I really just need some fiction. Also I hardly have time! That is also a thing. And no, I've never read Janette Oke. |

One Thousand Gifts is a really good book - but I think it is the only one of hers I have read!
To keep myself accountable, I am posting my goal on here... to finish reading Eleanor Roosevelt's autobiography by the end of the weekend... |

So what is it about? Mythology? I might want it, but since I got the ok to switch it up for the book requirements maybe I should try something else! Lol! I mean, you guys didn't really sell me on it! But seriously, give me a synopsis... |

Ok...let's see....I started it last November, I hate to admit that! I starts with a very LONG history of the bull, clear back to 8000 BC...the evolution of the cow, early myths and legends of the cow, etc. all through 1500 AD. Then it's the cow during the middle ages, domestication of the cow, cross breeding of cows....at this point it got a little more interesting, as they talked about monks and monasteries and the making of cheese. I had no idea that cheese was so important back then haha! That covered about 100 pages. Then it went into the 2nd half, which I thought was a lot more interesting and went a lot faster. It got into the industrialization of food, pandemics and famine, the whole cowboy/cattle drive/barb wire story...up until modern day with the milk and beef industry as it is today, ethical eating and the $300 Waygu sirloin. All throughout the book, the author keeps flashing back to his visit with a Masai man from Africa and how their lives are revolved around cattle. It's 211 pages of beef loving pleasure!! |

Well I finished the Eleanor Roosevelt last weekend or the weekend before, and went to put in for the badge, and realized I needed to post about what I learned... I'm not big on posting facts about people, so these points are more what I learned on a personal level...
- I hadn't realized how intertwined politicians' lives were and perhaps still are today. Franklin Roosevelt was named Assistant Secretary of the Navy and in the process of a sailing trip with then President Wilson, Eleanor Roosevelt met and had lunch with then Governor and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge... a future president.
- I'm going to quote part of the book for the second point... because I do not think I could restate it nearly so eloquently... "It may seem that I have gone into a great deal of frank detail about our family affairs and the personal life of the family. I have done so with a purpose, because I sometimes wonder whether the American public, which encourages the press to delve into the private lives of public servants and their families, realizes how much the family of a public man has to pay in lack of privacy for the fact that he is willing to serve his country in an elective or an appointive office" (page 140).
- I was made more aware of the hardship of war... Mrs. Roosevelt had taken two of her young sons to France to show the devastation after World war 1 and the grave of Quentin Roosevelt, when one of the children remarked about there seemingly being only older generations of men and boys there ages, but no men their father's age. One does not think about the generational gaps caused by wars... or the destruction left, as we here in the United States have not fought on our soil in such a long time that we do not know what it is truly like!
- Hyde Park was donated to the Federal Government by Eleanor Roosevelt after Franklin Roosevelt had passed. I had thought, for some reason, it was after they had both passed! I cannot comprehend handing over my husband's favorite place to be, to the people... even if he had served four terms!
- Towards the end of the book (Chapter 33), a personal conviction of mine is reiterated... When many are asked why the United States entered World War 2, they will say because of Pearl Harbor... and if asked why the Japanese struck, they will say it was unprovoked. This is not completely accurate. Eleanor Roosevelt put it as "Pearl Harbor was only the climax of years of mounting misunderstandings and antipathies throughout the world. And out of all this came Hiroshima." (340) |
