I recently finished reading a book by Sheila O'Connor. Sheila writes books suitable for young adults. The books cross over to adults.
Reenie Kelly is 11 years old in 1968. After her mother passed away, Reeni and her older brothers, Billy and Dare, are shipped off to live with their grandmother in Minnesota. This is a very different life from theirs in Missouri. Reeni dedicates herself to her new paper route which brings her to the door of Mr. Marsworth, the town recluse. Reenie goes door to door introducing herself to her new customers. Since Mr. Marsworth doesn't answer the door she leaves him a letter. To her surprise he answers. As they becomes pen pals Reeni tells him how she is desperate to keep her brother from going to war in Vietnam. Mr. Marsworth isn't just a loner but is a neighborhood outcast because of his antiwar beliefs. This is a beautiful story told through their letters.
Sheila is not only an award winner. She is my husband's step-cousin. |
