When I was growing up, we didn't watch very much television. Instead we stayed occupied with games, reading, homemade crafts, listening to music on the old stereo in the living room. We played pick-up sticks, marbles, jump rope, hopscotch, hula hoop, and if we had a group, we loved to play Red Rover,Mother May I or Red light Green light. The boys were always enthusiastic about breaking the line in Red Rover.
We played on the swings and the sliding board and built forts on the edge of our woods. We played with match box cars, baby dolls, and dirt. We also played board and card games like Chutes and Ladders, Checkers, and Go Fish.
While I didn't realize it at the time, this type of play was very important. We learned healthy competition, how to win at things, how to lose at things (since life is full of both wins and losses, all the way through), how try new things, how to play fair, how to be kind, and how to persevere. We learned about rules and manners. We learned it was ok to sit out if the going got too rough and we learned that, after a rest, there was always a right time to jump back in the game. We learned a lot about life from our play time. And now I realize that's what playing was all about.

Your words are so true, Denise. Children learn through play. It's so important. :)

I so agree, Denise. We were outside ALL the time. We didn't watch much tv, sometimes went to the movies, played Scrabble and other games, did crafts, and played with friends. On Monday the fire station's siren at 8 o'clock (which was set to indicate the weekly meeting for the firemen) also signified to those children in the neighborhood that it was time to get in the house and ready for bed.

I don't think I've ever seen a whole field of sunflowers. My parents used to grow them on the farm but only a small row or two. I bet they are beautiful covering a field!

When we first were married, we lived more in a rural area and our house backed up on some agricultural ground. One summer they planted sunflowers. There were acres and acres of them and they were stunning and gorgeous!! I will never forget how my backyard view was that year!!

I wish I had room for a clothesline. We have so many trees and I'm afraid the clean linens and clothes would get pooped on by the birds. LOL!
