Before I talk about any specific herbs I want to remind you all - I am NOT a professional! I have had no training - just my own research. I only do my herbal remedies for my family and a few close friends and none of us have any health issues that I'm aware of. Please do your own research!! Some things may not work for you that work for me. (An example could be something that flushes your kidneys might not be a good idea for a person with kidney disease.)
I also love to learn - so please feel free to jump in with any knowledge or questions you have. |

My first herb is a great one for it's nutritional value. I was skeptical at first - it's cow feed after all LOL! But it's surprisingly sweet tasting and I find it rather pleasant hot or iced.
Alfalfa.
This is in the field
This is brewing in my french press with some red clover
I haven't discovered any healing properties to it so it's best as a tea. Nutritional components (vitamins and minerals) don't seem to transfer into tinctures. I haven't gotten into the science of why yet. I was looking through some tea ingredients from places like Mountain rose herbs for inspiration and found that alfalfa is in quite a few blends. Since I have a couple fields of it...kind of dumb not to try it LOL! One of my books says it was considered so special it was reserved for stallions and warriors only. I also found a company called strictly medicinal seeds that sell small packets of alfalfa seeds (along with many others!). You can get a free catalog if you're interested: https://strictlymedicinalseeds.com/catalog-request/

And it being cow feed is what's getting me lol! Not sure what I think. I'm just envisioning walking out to my cows manager and grabbing some pieces and heading back inside to add it to my tea lol!

Hello! I am a trained herbalist, I just finished my thesis last year and have studied about 8 years now. I do t think you can ever say you stop learning….theres always something new to learn and research. I love that about herbalism though. I hope to go in deeper when circumstances allow, I hope to take more courses in regards to clinical cases. There’s so much to learn from others. If any one has any questions, I’d be happy to answer to the best of my knowledge and if I don’t know, I will say :) |

Krista - LOL! I should have specified that I cut mine from the field, bring it in and wash it, then put it in my dehydrator. I've never went out to the bunk for the cows and gotten it. I guess you could if you wanted to though LOL!
Joyce - One day I'd love to take classes and be at your level! Please feel free to join in with your favorite herbs, what you do with them, etc. and correct me if I'm wrong on anything! |

Today's herb is one I think you all are familiar with - Blackberry!
The leaves and roots can be used to treat diarrhea. I've read that children should have the leaves made into tea. Adults can use the stronger roots for tea. I have only dried leaves since I've yet to research how to get some roots without damaging the plant. One time I used the leaves for tea and it worked for me. I also made a tincture with the leaves but I haven't had to try it yet to see if it works. |

Joyce, I took herbalist classes too almost 30 years ago. I don't remember all of it at this point. But I have found it quite useful.
Red clover is supposed to be good for the arterial walls so good for heart related issues. Also good for anxiety and depression in women who have gone through menopause and good for osteoporosis. Excess amounts which I think would be what is taken in capsule form can be more harmful than helpful. Can cause infertility.
In fresh form it should be harvested first thing in the morning when there is still dew on the ground. Being careful not to bruise the leaves. You should not use the stems or any discolored flowers. There are cautions though that too much can cause problems. Nausea and headaches. I have drank red clover tea on and off in the past.
In animals it is believed to cause infertility when eaten excessively but I'm thinking rabbits eat it so there's that. Lol. |

Karen - I hope you do! And with experts among us I hope I learn a lot as well!!
Denise - I can speak from experience that too much red clover causes infertility in cows and especially sheep. In sheep it can cause an entire flock to become permanently infertile. In cattle it's a bit more tricky because the same amount can cause one cow to become permanently infertile while another cow will have no side effects at all. We're dealing with the cow issue now. My understanding is red clover is estrogenic - meaning it doesn't contain estrogen itself (like soy) instead it causes the cows (and sheep) to produce estrogen. Too much estrogen is a problem...
Red clover is also a blood purifier (and a good source of protein for animals). I've read that is can be helpful for women dealing with menopause because of the estrogen thing. |
