I can't seem to get rid of the rings we have, because of hard water and it's really beginning to drive me nuts. I've used store bought cleaners, but now that we're going green, I'd like to know if there is a more natural cleaner I could use. Thanks in advance.

I never thought that laundry and toilets could be such fun subjects! I just bought all of my supplies to make my homemade detergent and a 2-liter of coke for the toilet! After having our septic pumped out because we thought it was full, only to find out $100.00 later the pipe was clogged I found out another thing you can do for your toilet. Instead of buying the enzyme treatments, the guy said to put a package of yeast in. He said it does the same thing for a lot less. He also said the best thing to do for drains is vinegar, baking soda and hot water, which I am sure a lot of you know about. I must confess I thought of you all to pass on the yeast tip and I must also say the guy did charge us 120.00 less than normal when he realized it didn't need pumped out but was clogged which he took care of. I nice to know there are still some honest people in the world!! |

I have used the coke idea...and it has to be warm...and don't let it sit forever...it will corrode...makes you wonder what our tummies look like...I asked my mom and she said that to make a thick baking soda paste, drain the toilet, paste the potty and let sit for a bit...then just scrub and flush.

I am going to have to try the coke for sure. The only thing I have found that really works is the lysol cleaner in the blue bottle but I don't really like using it. The coke idea sounds better but I don't know if I will drink anymore soda after this. |

If you ever read the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" you will have read where the maid used a piece of red brick to scrub the toilet. Doesn't scratch. I have used it from time to time and it doesn't scratch and it will clean. Takes some scrubbing though. Sounds like the pumice stone might be easier to come by.

I use a pumice stone and Desert Essence's Castile with Tea tree...
That stuff is a GREAT all purpose cleaner...
It makes my toilet so clean and shiny!

The only time I have seen pumice scratch is when it is used too aggressively or when used on very old toilets that have been much abused through the years.

Coca-cola eats through stuff. My dad accidentally turned over a Coke can on his shotgun, found it the next morning and the coca-cola had eaten partly through the metal.
He told us that to try to keep us from drinking it. Didn't work though...

pour in a bottle of coca cola and let it set for a while then scrub. seriously..I saw this on that BBC neat show where the 2 women come in and turn these awfully dirty houses into neat as a pin places again. they used a bottle of coca cola, the big 2 liter things dumped the whole thing in there, shut the lid for a little while then came back and scrubbed it. Dunno how it works but it did.

I have the same problem with my water, only my water has a lot of iron in it too. I finally found two methods that have been successful in getting rid of the ring. I pour a cup of Borax with a few drops of tea tree essential oil in the bowl & let it sit over night, then give a good scrub before flushing. After that I add CLR to the water & let it sit for a few hours, scrub & flush. I've done this several times and now my toilet bowl is finally white again.

What I like to do is reduce the water level to almost zero, pour in straight vinegar until it is over the water line and let is soak for about 2 hours, then with _gentle_ pressure use a pumice stone. If you scrub ultra hard you could possibly scratch the porcelain finish which will just allow the minerals to hold on harder the next time. Vinegar is also a disinfectant so after I am done, I like to swish toilet brush and really get all the bits where the water comes down from.

hahahaha, Nancy Jo!! I was going to say "Get you hubby to do it!" Or the kids. :) What about borax and a little lemon juice? You will have to get your hands in there though. It really is the best way to clean. Oh, but wear gloves.

Leave a denture tablet or two in the toilet, then scrub with the pumice.

I have only used the ones for the toilet, on the toilet. They are a softer pumice than the ones for feet. Do the feet ones scratch your surfaces at all? I have a clawfoot tub and am scared of scratches.

Yes, I was also going to suggest a pumice stone ... I use the ones you buy for pumicing your heels and elbows...they are sometimes shaped like a foot, curved ends which work nicely in the round or oval shaped toilet bowl. Somtimes they go on sale for less than $1 each and I stock up, although they last a long time.
