I saw a post by khartquilt and she used cast iron to make her bread. I have been looking over different brands and I wondered if any of you could recommend something that you use and are happy with for the best price too.

I also like my Lodge cast iron but most of my favorites are not even marked with a company brand that I have used for years. They are seasoned well! Most of them I have bought at the good old hardware store. Once they are seasoned they are good to go!

I prefer old Griswold or Wagner over Lodge, but that's just personal opinion. China/Taiwan cast iron scares me, not knowing what all they might use to make the pans. Quality is much lower than USA made too.
The Paula Deen enameled cast iron is at Target, hefty weight and price.
I'll stick with my vintage pans and will post some up for new homes soon. Have way too many and both kids have taken what they want already. When I can't use my cast iron, I'll have to stop cooking :)

Heather is exactly right! I can tell she has experience seasoning or reseasoning her own past rusty dutchy. I know that I said I did mine out on the grill but you can do them in the house. I just tend to get the house a bit smoky sometimes when I am "refurbishing" an old pan.

I have lots of old Griswold cqast iron pans. I don't know if they are just New England area ones. I see Lodge ones at the store, they look wonderful, but since I can barely pick up the ones I already have, I don't dare acquire any more. They do make the best home fries, the best cornbeef hash, etc.

Oh thanks so much for the input ladies. I am definitely going to keep my eyes open while thrifting. I have seen the Lodge brand at Lehmans and Cabelas. Will look into it a bit more.

I love the OLD cast iron I can find them for just a few dollars it seems that people just don't use cast iron anymore. They just shove it in the garage or basement and come garage sale time out it goes! I have been getting them and saving them for my girls I think a full set of cast iron cookwear would be a awesome wedding gift!

I have lots of Lodge cast iron. But I don't have a 1 1/2 qu that MJ sourdough recipe says to use. Can I use one of my dutch ovens and make a round loaf and place it in the bottom of the pot? Have more questions about MJ sourdough but I think I'll start a new topic.

I have an enameled cast iron pot from Lodge. It works fine but is a little on the cheap side. It has a plastic knob handle on the top. It was only like $60. There are definitely better quality ones on the market that will last lifetimes, but they are more expensive. I like the ones in antique stores...you know those ones are good if they've been around so long lol!

Denise- We use almost all cast iron here. My bread is made in cast iron bread pans by lodge, and I won't use anything else to bake bread in! I am very picky about where my cast iron comes from, if it's not made in the USA then I am not using it. Enamel coated cast iron isn't made in he USA because there is no factory that does the adhearing of the enamel. DH bought me a Lodge (old style) wok from ebay for my b-day and he got a great deal! If you are looking for bread pans lodge has discountinued them but they are available through their outlet store until they are gone, the phone # is 865-429-1713.

I agree that Lodge is a good quality product.

Don't hesitate purchasing that rusty old pot at a thrift store or yard sale. My favorite one is one that a friend of mine had given me. Her mother had bought it from an estate sale and because it was rusty my friend didn't want it. I gently rubbed the rust spot with a little fine steel wool and oil then coated the entire pan inside and out with oil. Then threw it on my 350 preheated grill and left it for an hour then shut the grill off leaving the pan there to cool. I did that heating a couple of times. Those little rusty dutchy pots and pans are a real gem that can easily be brought back to life for a fraction of the cost of new.

I really like Lodge cast iron cookware. I think it is good quality and ok on price. But I may be a bit impartial since it is made in my home state of TN. The enameled cast iron works great, too. I have a Le Creuset Dutch oven that is fabulous, but expensive. Thankfully we got it as a gift, because I would not have bought it for myself. I think that Lodge may have a line of enameled ones now, too. And I noticed some Paula Deen enameled cast-iron cookware the other day. Hopefully some more ladies will reply here becuase I need to get another piece, too.
