I have a glass top stove. Read with interest that canning is not always an option with one. Is the same true for making soap? Please let me know. Have everything I need, now not too sure regarding soap.

Hope everyone is having a great day!!

I just ordered lye from The Lye Guy. Buy 5 get one free. With Fed Ex shipping it was $41.90. Shipping is really high. So I should be set now to make lots of soap. Got more oils today too. Have fun making your soap!

Hi Sally. You should be ok making soap. All you're doing is heating oils. What kind will you be making? I just got done making 5 different batches on Tuesday. I need more coconut oil now so I can make more. And lye. I looked up The Lye Guy and he's not popping up. So will have to check elsewhere I guess. Have fun! You can go to my blog and see my posts on soap there if you want.

ok dear hen, you will be alright with this...you just need to make sure your lye & the oils/fats ect are the right temp before you blend them together....after that you are not using heat anymore but just stirring to activate the ingreds together to form the soap......so have a good candy themometer handy to test so the lye cools down to what it needs to be & that your fats/oils are up to the temp they need to be...the only time the stove is used is for heating the oils/fats...the lye should be always added to cool water not hot or the container can explode ....Fran is talking about doing old fashioned lye soap, which I make thats done out on a fire & the fire is under & on the whole time you are making the soap to cook out the extra water....most soap recipes do not call for that kind of cooking anymore as you are doing what is called a cold press whereas with the old ways you are doing a true hot pressed soap that can take up to days to do......Michele'

When I was a kid I knew a lady who made hers on a fire in her back yard. Iam not sure at what temp soap needs to cook so this may be hard for someone whos never done it, but I don't actually know anything about soap making.
