Last night (9 pm) I went down to lock all the doors and gates at the hen house. Around back I found a dead chicken, fresh kill, so I grabbed a trap and put the remains inside.

This morning (8:30 am) I go down to open pens, feed and milk the goats.

There in the trap was a juvinile hawk, really pissed off. I got a stick, propped the door open and went inside the henhouse to watch. It took a few minutes for the hawk to gets it wings clamped close to its body and it walked out of the trap, as soon as, it cleared the trap, it took flight to a nearby tree. Beautiflu sight, I bet this one stays out of traps for a while.

All my poultry is still penned up, I will let everyone out late this afternoon.

Yes, I will be setting the trap at dusk and see if I can catch the chicken killer.

LeaLou barked and circled the trap while I was looking for a stick, but when I went inside she came with me. Proves she is smarter than she looks, sometimes.

We have a lot of hawks here. The coopers hawks and the blue darters are the ones that get chickens. I have never had a problem with red tails bothering them. In fact never in 50 years. But I guess it's possible. He certainly looks suspicious...lol. Red tails normally eat rodents. They are very beneficial.

Her abdomen was torn open and her insides were missing. She was 3 years old, and in good health.
