I am really enjoying watching the songbirds at my bird feeder this week. Well, because I am off work due to my recent hip replacement surgery, and I don't often get to see them, it is a real treat for me.

I have blackbirds, red-wing blackbirds, cardinals, chickadees blue jays, sparrows, goldfinches, juncoes, mourning doves, and a little pinky-red and brown bird that I think is a kind of finch but can't remember the name.

I am feeding suet, sunflower seeds (that we raised ourselves last summer) niger thistle seed, and a commercial wild bird mix.

Anyone else have birdfeeders in the backyard or barnyard? How do you attract them?

I love birds! I have several seed and suet feeders visible from my kitchen and living room windows so I can keep an eye on my friends whenever I have a chance. I live near a wooded area and I have lots of native trees and plants in my own yard so we attract a wide variety of birds at our feeders...Goldfinches, Pine Siskins, Oregon Juncos, Bushtits, Wrentits, Red-headed Finches, Varied Thrushes, Towhees, Townsend's Warblers, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Kinglets, Robins, Flickers, Pileated Woodpeckers and Ring-Necked Pidgeons are common visitors. And of course my very favorites are the Hummingbirds. I have three pairs of Anna's Hummingbirds that stay here year round so we have three feeders up in different areas of the yard since they are quite territorial. Then from February - September we have a family of Rufous Hummingbirds that dominate a fourth feeder in the front yard. They used to nest in a shrub near our front door but it broke off in an ice storm last winter so they moved to a local tree last summer. Such adorable little friends!

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

I recently decided to start making special treats for my wild birds. I mixed a cup of birdseed with one ounce jello dissolved in 1/4 cup warm water. I put it in a square container and put it in the freezer. When it was ready, I popped it out and put it in the suet holder. The recipe calls for unflavored geletin but I couldn't find it so I used cherry. I hope the birds like it.

between my neighbor and myself we have a few bird feeders, bird baths, suet hangers, and lots of bird houses in my yard. My grandchildren and I just did a project of making bird houses from the gourds I grew. I love them all, but my very favorite is my humming birds. I have had the same family come back for 4 years now. They know we have at least 2 feeders, and always fresh. I have been hearing morning doves lately, and every once in awhile the hoot of an owl. I love my birds.

Love, love my birds. My little one and I always go out to fill up the feeders and it's one of her favorite jobs. My husband switched jobs last month and money has been...tight, to say the least, and unfortunately, I wasn't able to feed them for a couple of weeks and I swear the male Cardinals were sitting in the front tree, stalking me. I would go outside in the morning and hear (what I swore was) the taunting of the chickadee and felt TOTALLY guilty

But, now they're fed, fat and sassy. The little red and brown bird you mention is the House Finch, Brenda--we have those, the Eastern Towee, the "Lesser" goldfinch, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Chickadees, Pileated woodpeckers, Flickers, my favorite--all the wrens--and countless sparrows, nuthatches and a few others that I can't think of right now. Oh! Don't forget the squirrels. They're not birds, but they eat just as much of the seed, if not more...

We have many many bird feeders---seed and suet. We also plant flower gardens around and away from the house that attract birds and butterflies. Isn't it fun. Sometimes it is nice to step back relax and enjoy your surroundings---even though with you it was surgery. BTW: I hope you are recovering perfectly. MB
