Finally - I gave butter making a shot. I bought 3 quarts of cream at the grocery because it was on sale. I tried the marble in a jar - not much luck. Considered using the food processor - then decided to give the old KitchenAid a whirl. It work perfectly - all I had to do was keep an eye on the whipping cream stages and put a large dish towel over the top to keep the splashing to a minimum. I got a pound and a half of butter and quart and a half of buttermilk.

I followed the instructions in the BACKYARD HOMESTEADING book about washing it and all. So easy - I will definitely use this method again.

Love that I can control how much salt goes in it. Cheese making is next on the list and DH is into making beer and other spirits.

I have an old squareish glass jar w/wooden paddles and a crank, to make butter,,, but I just use a small pint jar, fill it 2/3 way up, put the lid back on and just shake, shake, shake, usually while watching TV,,, and then once done, it's separated, I remove the 'butter'.. give it a little rinse and press it into a lidded container,,, I don't add salt so I have to use my butter up w/I a week, and that is why I make it in such small batches...
so yummy, fresh, sweet, unsalted butter on a Kaiser roll... yumyum...

I'm now getting raw milk from a neighbor and making butter . . . I don't have a Kitchen Aid or similiar mixer, but my food processor does a great job. I'm also making yogurt in a crockpot and doing it Greek style . . thick and creamy!

I grew up on a farm with jersey cows. I grew up on raw milk and butter. I swore when I left home and bought my own groceries, I would have margarine. Something always smooth and spreadable. I envied friends whose parents always had margarine and loved to eat at their homes. now that I am able to buy my own...I wished I had a cow and always buy butter! I can not stand the taste of margarine....lol

A rind is a terrible thing to waste. Compost.

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”

Good for you Lora!!!

I also use my Kitchen-Aid with a large flour sack towel thrown over it :) I love being able to control the amount of salt also.

My mom made all our butter on the farm as we milked our cows. She made my younger sister and I shake the cream in quart jars to make butter . . . we hated it!!! But we were kids!
As an adult when we lived on a place where we milked cows I used the Kitchen Aid method!

congrats, and on to bigger and better things! I have found that just shaking the cream in a jar gives me the best results. But everyone has their favorite. Enjoy it.
