I have never ever been a good sleeper, but boy, the past couple years I am lucky to sleep 3 hours. I am always up early-wide awake (since 4am today,)but get real tired after a few days of the sleeplessness. I have tried melatonin and all the natural sleep aids I can think of. I get to sleep but an hour later I am wide awake again. Sigh. I don't ned to be up to milk the cow any more haha. Any of you have this issue? I shouldn't complain I guess, I got through menopause stuff fairly easily but a good nights sleep would sure be nice!

Inside me there is a skinny girl crying to get out, but I can usually shut her up with cookies.

Sad to say, Jennie, but I take 2 Benedryl every night. I take it about an hour before bed and I sleep like a baby. :)

Let me know Jenny. I am not condoning taking some drug every night, but I WAS having allergy/sinus, and the sleep aid was such an added bonus!
Last weeks hubs was working second. He came home at like 2:30 AM and woke me up. He said that I mumbled (I don't remember), "I took a Benadryl; it's a beautiful thing"
Only someone who doesn't get sleep can understand that.

My daughter takes it occasionally for allergies. I will give it a try, thanks!

Jenny
I've developed some kind of adult sinus; have Nasonex, do an irrigation etc etc, but nothing worked. And of course I was coughing at night, plus I, too, am menopausal and wake up like every hour. (also have thyroid issues, but that is under control, thanks to Armour Thyroid)
Well, a couple of weeks ago, my sister was mentioning using this for a good nights sleep, so I went and bought the cheapest, most generic pack of Benadryl out there, and I could not believe it.
First of all, I no longer have my sinus issues, which I had been battling for months.
But the sleep has been gorgeous. I am sleeping 3-4 hours before I wake up! I haven't done that in forever! I know you probably shouldn't take Benadryl every day, and I haven't been. But a few nights a week can't hurt. No where on the package does it say not to take more than 10 days, like some meds do.
It's worth a try!!!

I do have thyroid issues... well, did. Had to have whole thing removed in 2011 due to very large nodules and suspicious biopsies and like that. But do get my labwork done regularly and all. Still struggling with sleep. I sure appreciate all the suggestions. Having a physical with a new doctor before the end of the year when my insurance changes for the better, so that may help as well.

What they said. I have no idea what your past health lineup looks like.
But things I might try on people in my house... lavender oil rubbed on feet before bed, magnesium lotion/oil rubbed/sprayed on belly, black-out curtains, blah blah blah. I know I've been having issues with my own adrenals and thyroid (nine years of nursing, some tandem, being pregnant, a hubby out of town one year, and PPD has messed up my health/sleep something fierce). It's a rough road to travel and fix.

I am going through menopause and my Lyme both were keeping me from sleeping more than a few hours. My natural doctor put me on a homeopathic female endocrine spray and a pituitary/hypothalamus pill and that did the trick. I sleep soundly again!

Jenny, I would suggest that you go to your regular physician and talk this out. He/She would be able to rule out any metabolic abnormalities with some blood testing and order a sleep study to see what is going on with you. Sleepless nights are not only a problem of being able to feel good, they have huge negative cardiovascular implications in the long run. With a proper diagnosis of what your specific problems are, you will be able to work with some new guidelines in what is called "Sleep Hygiene" to retrain your body to sleep in a normal pattern. Sleep studies done in an overnight sleep lab are the fastest way to get to the heart of the issue and get you started in what the next steps will be. This will all take some weeks to get an appointment for a sleep study and get the results. In the meantime, your physician can suggest an interim plan to help you and correct any other metabolic issues that might be there such as thyroid dysfunction. Your problem is a very common one, but there are solutions that will help you get back to sleeping better that are not sleeping drugs, but ways to address your specific issues like sleep apnea or metabolic irregularities. I hope you can get to the core of this issue very soon and start sleeping better and feeling more refreshed in the morning!
