Today's e-mail from MaryJane was on how to make a quill pen. Boy, did that bring back memories. In first grade I was taught to write with a staff pen. The same idea as a quill pen but instead of a feather it was a wooden staff the size of a pencil with metal pen inserted in it.

We printed with a fat yellow pencil and wrote cursive with staff pen. Mrs. Mayberry, who was also the principle was a stickier for using the staff pen. I think she thought it built character as well as good penmanship.

I hated it because no matter how hard I tried I always seemed to drop ink on my paper. Bless her heart she overlooked the blotches of ink and I always got a '1' in her class. She gave out no 'A-F' ~~~ she graded '1-5'.

Have a blessed day, Sara
