Each month a new block (or two) will be posted and a new thread will begin for each new month. I hope many of you will join in and we will have a lot of new quilts in 12 months or less.

You can join in at any time. We'd love to have you!

*****************************************

This month Marilyn (TexasGran) chose our block(s) for June a couple days early. You can either do one of them or both of them. Both blocks have been around for a long time.

Remember to use scant 1/4" seams when making these blocks.

For the beginner quilters she chose the Rail Fence, one that is very easy, but looks great. This will work very easily with stripes and plaids.
http://www.quilterscache.com/R/RailFenceBlock.html
The other one she chose was Churn Dash, a pattern that has many variations that have evolved along the way. You will have to be careful with stripes and plaids on the corner half-square triangle blocks in this pattern.
http://www.quilterscache.com/C/ChurnDashBlock.html

HELPFUL HINT for the Rail Fence block:
You might want to make your 2-1/2" strips 1/2" to 1" longer than the 26" the pattern specifies. Press the seams to the darker color before you cut them into 6-1/2" squares. You will now have a small piece left over after cutting four 6-1/2" squares.
If you are making this block really scrappy, you can make 16 strips of different colors, each will be 6-1/2" long. Sew them together in groups of 3 and you will have 4 different sets to sew together for your block.

HELPFUL HINT for the Churn Dash block: For the 4-7/8" squares in steps 1, 2 and 3 that the directions say to cut in half, I find it easier to make your strip 5" x 10" and cut those into two 5" squares instead of 4-7/8". Then draw a diagonal line corner-to-corner on both light-colored squares, put the two squares right sides together, and stitch a scant 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Next cut apart along the drawn line, press the squares, and trim them up to 4-1/2".

Your blocks should measure 12-1/2" square when finished.

Have fun with these blocks and post your blocks so we can all see what fabrics you are using.

I have a bin full of fabric bits and pieces left over from other quilts/toys/clothing/aprons/potholders etc that I've made. I'm using fabrics from that bin for this block of the month. It's going to be an interesting color combination for me. I'm usually a person that matches pretty much everything. For this I'm just diving in, picking what strikes me at the moment and going with it. I'm so excited! Everyones blocks are wonderful. Fun seeing how the different colors and choices of layout affect the outcome. Yayyyy!!!

WOO HOO! You go, girl! Glad to see you are catching up! Nice blocks.

I'm the same way. Sometimes if I am behind I just need to get in the mood to sew and then there's no stopping me.

I got my blocks finished, but had some trouble uploading the picture. Everyone's blocks are so pretty. I really like doing these blocks every month. Thanks Linda for getting this started for us.

Thanks, Linda, and yes it is really fun when you sew it all together! It's like unwrapping a present in a way to see the final product. By the way, the doggie fabric and the small floral in the churn dash were squares from your fabric swaps!

I love those blocks, Amy! Great fabrics. Isn't it fun seeing the difference that alternate fabrics give a block pattern?

Beverly, your block is so pretty. Well, here are mine from this month. The churn dash I used the dark for the center instead of the light, because I wanted the large square to have the doggies in it. I've making these blocks, it's a real adventure!

Will do, Linda! I love the blocks everyone has made so far. Mine are cut and hopefully will be sewn this weekend. I have to put in my 2 cents about Marilyn, too. Marilyn, you are one of the most giving, true-hearted people I've ever known. :)

Christy has chosen her blocks for July, and has sent them to me. I will post them on July 1 (or maybe a day or two sooner) with some helpful hints.
Amy is choosing a block or 2 for August and Julie for September.
Amy and Julie - please send me the links to your blocks as soon as you choose them so I can see if clarification might be necessary for the newer quilters.
Thanks, all!

I love your blocks, Julie. Especially the trailer prints. I just bought some fabric with vintage trailers on it.

I'm glad you liked my version of the Churn Dash block. What I like about quilt blocks is you can change the colors, number of prints, and sometimes even placement of the colors to make completely different looking blocks. These are your blocks, and you can do whatever you want.

Here are my two blocks. I took a cue from Linda on using two colors for the Churn Dash block.
