I saw some posts about ladies wanting to learn how to tat. It is a very simple fabric art that is becoming a lost art. Barbara Foster has a very simple beginners book found on Amazon and there are videos on youtube by Rustikate that are very good. I am including a pictures of some of the tatting I have done. I have only been tatting for about a year.

Vickie... I didn't get the pattern off you tube exactly but they are pretty easy. Start with a ring of 2 double stitches 1 picot 2ds 1p 2ds 1p 2ds and close. Then a chain of 5ds. Repeat until there are 30 rings and 29 chains. Then 14 ds to turn. Now make a ring but make the second picot by linking it to the top pic of of the last ring in the row you just made. Continue to the end. Make chain of 14 picots and attach to the joint between the very first ring and chain. Tie off and secure your ends. Sew a piece of elastic in a loop on the ends where the 14 ds' are. I attached a close up and a diagram. Hope this all makes sense.

Debbie...I'm too intimidated by the shuttle. I'm going to try to master the needle tatting first. I'm intimated by that, also, but not as much as the shuttle. Let's hope I can do this!

Ladies, I am confident that you can learn it. I taught my self from a book way before you tube.
It takes a few minutes to get your mind around it. The results are amazing.

I watched a needle tatting video the other day and it looked easier than I thought....l"looked easier"! I picked up a couple of shuttles the other day, though, because I want to learn with a shuttle as well. I've watched a shuttle tatting video several times this morning and I'm going to practice more today. I'm hoping I get the hang of it! It's kind of humbling to start out learning something new when I've been knitting and crocheting so long that I don't really have to think about it much.

Hi Vickie! I bought that book too! I'm going to give it a try. I'm excited but nervous. I guess the worst that can happen is it looks terrible and I just "frog" it and start over.

Christine, needle tatting is so easy. I really am not a craft person so if I can do it anyone can. I bought Barbara Foster's book, it comes with a set of needles. I just did rings and chains until I got them perfect then started on very small projects. There are many youtube videos as well. Give it a try. |

Such lovely work you are all doing! My great-aunt taught me as a child -- with a shuttle -- when we were on vacation. Then I went back home and didn't have her guiding hand to help me learn to close my picot loops. Sad face! I always think I should take it up again. I agree with whoever mentioned that it is such a nice small piece of equipment! I knit sox on planes because they are so portable, but a nice tatting shuttle would be even better. Oh dear......I feel I am falling down yet ANOTHER deep deep rabbit hole!!!

Debbie...I won't have time to go to the store today. I figured that out last night. I went on Amazon and ordered a book which comes with a "kit" and another instruction book. It will be here tomorrow and I can't wait to get started. I love learning new things. I also think that a lot of these "old art" practices are depleting in society. I've been knitting, crocheting and sewing since a very young age. I'd rather do that than watch television. It's just what I'm drawn to and who I am. I already have the "thread" here, so I'll just jump in. I'm excited, but nervous at the same time!! I'm going to be needle tatting, as the shuttle tatting looks like something I will screw up from the beginning. :( I want to get the needle tatting downpat first. We shall see.
I was looking for info on how to "needle tat" a square. Is that a thing? I'm not sure if it even exists. If anyone knows if this even is an option, please direct me to a website so I can look into it.
Debbie...if your Joann's matches coupons, I've been getting daily emails from Michael's with awesome coupons. Maybe your Joann's will match the Michael's coupon and save you some money. (Then you can get more tatting supplies :) ) I'll keep you filled in on how I do. Fingers crossed I can do this. At least I now know someone is in the same boat as I am and I can have some "beginner inspiration" so I won't be as nervous to try this!

Thank you for the tip, Nancy! I feel just like Christine.....I knit, crochet and sew....but tatting has always intimidated me. Christine, we really need to try this ! I will read everything I have on tatting over the weekend and then make a stop at Joann's on Tuesday next week when I go into the "big city"...haha! I have a whole drawer of size 10 thread, I might have to Google size 3. |

Christine, thread is cheap. It's ok to mess up and either pick out the mistakes or toss and start over. Start with a coaster or simple chain. My first project was trim for a clothespin holder. One you learn how to make a ring and a chain everything else is either one or the other. Wish I could wiggle my nose and pop in and show you how but You Tube has those lovely ladies. Mary Jane's stitching book has a good chapter on tatting too.
