Way to go! Japanese looks very difficult to write and read. I like your person of choice. It's wonderful when women are portrayed as strong and powerful and just as equal as men. Thank you for sharing some Japanese culture and writing. I found it very fascinating.

OK, I guess the forum does not support Japanese keyboard. All of those numbers were Japanese characters. So here's a picture of what I had wrote originally.

I'm going to submit for my Language and Culture intermediate badge. But I first have to share what I've learned, and who I chose as my influential person.

When I was working on my beginner badge I chose Japan/Japanese. My grandpa was stationed in Japan and had his family there, so we would always hear stories of Japan and what was like to live there. And in high school I taught myself how to read two of their three forms of writing. So yeah, I can read Japanese little bit.

Anyway for the intermediate bad I had to choose a person who is influential in their culture. So I chose Hayao Miyazaki (#23470;#23822; #39423;). He was born in 1941. He is a Japanese director, producer, screenwriter, animator, author, and manga artist. His films often feature nature and man's relationship with nature versus technology. His films also often feature strong girls or young female protagonists who don't need anyone to save them. The women portrayed in his movies are not done so in a sexual manner which is nice considering how many movies are made nowadays. He was quoted as saying, "Any woman is just as capable of being a hero as any man." His movies also encourage peace rather than war, and pacifism. The 'villains' in the stories are usually empathetic and not portrayed as truly evil. Almost all of his films have been released in the United States some had been released by Disney. The most notable one, which was featured in theaters in 2001 was called Spirited Away. As of 2013 he was declared as retired from filmmaking, but he has returned and is now working on another film.

The second half of my merit badge was to learn a few words or key phrases in my chosen language. These are some that I actually know by heart.

It took me forever to find out how to spell Farmgirl Sisterhood in Japanese!
