My American grandma was a Farmgirl... sort of,,,
When I think of what a task doing laundry was then,,, compared to now,,, it is just amazing...
Grandma had to have a 'wicker laundry basket' that could double as a baby bed,,,
she had to have a clothes pin bag,,
laundry soap (homemade or store bought when the budget allowed)... she needed bleach as well as 'Blueing'...
and if she didn't have a wash machine nor electricity,,, she would use a tin tub and wash board...
Yep,,, we have it so easy today... our only dilemma is so I buy scented laundry soap or Eco friendly... toss in the laundry,, push a button and off we go to our favorite Quilt store while our laundry is being washed...

I use my (vtg) ironing board as a display table outside my trailer,,, sometimes as a appetizer bar and sometimes as a wine bar...

Oh Sara I wish you had pics to post!
I remember my mom had a Pepsi bottle with a cork sprinkler type top that she used.
And I have also contributed to the Niagara Spray Starch conglomerate. LOL...
Nowadays, it gets washed and hung, and that is it!
When I take out the ironing board, it has dust on it..

Before there was spray starch we boiled starch in a pot and dipped clothes in it. In the 1950s when can-can petticoats were all the rage we starched them too - hung on line and ironed. Because we wore more than one petticoat to make our circle skirts stand out we had to wear waist cinchers. All that so we could look good from our bobby socks and loafers to our bubble hairdos.
I have a 1930s home economic text book and all cleaning supplies were so dangerous women had to get them at the drugstore. When I was growing up my mother got her cleaning supplies from the Watkins man.

I remember all these products as well! My Mom always had a bar of Octagon soap to rub on collars before washing them too. Plus, she also used that Niagra spray starch for clothing. I can't imagine having to make a big fire and put the copper kettle over it to heat water and wash the clothes each week. N wonder people only had one or two of anything. If they had to wash all the clothes we have today, nobody would have had time to grow gardens or cook food! Something to wonder about on a Monday.......

Don't forget the starch in the shirt collars. When I was first married in 1962 a department store had a demonstration of how to iron a man's shirt in 3 minutes. I have done it that way for 55 years!
