My brother's wife is having their first baby in Feb. My sister is having her first and second (twins) in April. I would like to crochet and sew some things for them. There are a lot of patterns out there for things, but since I don't have any children of my own yet I'm not sure what the best (most useful) things are to make and what doesn't really get used. I'm sure bibs are a great idea, but what else would you recommend I make or don't make. Thanks in advance for any help :)

Receiving blankets are my favorite to make, along with a quilted for mat. I have also seen some really cute crocheted crib mobiles.
A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

Heather, the pack n play sheet I made was with directions from www.prettyprudent.com/2010/02/baby-kid-/diy-fitted-sheet-for-pack-n-play-2/
I made both cotton and cotton flannel.
The crib sheets were for a nursery set and I have since given the pattern packet away. It was very simple.
Since then, I would only make the sheets (crib and bassinet) and not buy them. I am thinking now of making the covers for shopping cart seats and high chairs in restaurants.

Heather it seems like your interested in those hat and diaper cover sets. I do have a book that has those patterns in it. Maybe about 10 different ones. It has sets such as a dog, rabbit, giraffe, etc. I can always send you pictures of the patterns if you are interested.

Deborah - I'll look into a swaddle - not sure what it is.
Allison - Thanks for the info about acrylic yarn. I didn't know that! I don't want to be causing my nieces and/or nephews to have heat rashes.

Whatever you crochet, can I recommend wool rather than acrylic yarn? Babies don't sweat, they just overheat, and acrylic yarn sweaters and booties don't breathe and can cause overheating. Basically, it's a layer of plastic on baby. Wool is a breathable fiber that warms to baby's temperature and then retains heat without overheating. I've seen actual heat rashes on babies in wintertime and found they were wearing plastic fiber clothing almost exclusively. Weird, huh? Just a thought.
The most useful thing I was given for my babies was 6 dozen flat diapers. Back then we had plastic pants only and then some miracle worker designed those velcro diaper covers. They took longer to dry on the line but they were so easy to use!
I know there are patterns for them on the internet.

Judith - do you have a pattern or someplace on line I should look for making sheets?
Marie & Krista - I agree with blue for both boys and girls. I was thinking more along the lines of boys make better bears, puppies, etc. and girls would be better for butterflies and ladybugs. You know those crochet hat and diaper covers that are critters? My sister is going to do the nursery in yellow and grey so I can go with those colors. My sister-in-law is thinking of doing a woodlands theme with bears and coons and stuff like that. At least that gives me something to work with. Too many ideas is a bad thing for me LOL!!

I agree with Marie! I'm not a fan of gender specific colors. Neutral colors work great. Plus I really dislike that blue is for boys because I think blue is pretty for girls too.

Some themes are unisex. I personally never use the pink/girl blue/boy colors. I prefer to use a variegated yarn as a start, then add a dark color and a light color from the variegated color way and add a neutral color to bring it together. This scheme works well for a ripple pattern.

I found a pattern to crochet a carseat cover and some things to attach to pacifiers - Do you think those would be a good idea? What about those cocoon wrap type blankets? I also like the matching hat and diaper cover things, but I figured I should wait and see what the sex of the babies is before I start on any of those.

i try to crochet the new babies in my life - blankets. speaking of which i need to get going on 2. one for my nephew and one for my son.

Depending on the time of year, hats are nice! Both my boys were born in the winter and the hats were nice for keeping them warm. Also I think blankets are nice. I am currently making my boys both blankets for Christmas! For my showers I loved the handmade bibs and burp cloths! Hope that helps.
