How many of you know that you can plant an onion and grow green onions from it? I do this all the time if they are sprouting and going to ruin. They are so good. My grandparents taught me this. Their surplus onions they had left over in the spring they planted this way---they called it setting out the big heads.

Barbara I do this with garlic too. I use it as fresh garlic and don't wait for it to form cloves before I harvest it.

Plant them anytime. I even do this in the fall and winter in a sunny place. Just stick them down in a pot of dirt about halfway or even just push them down in a little bit. They will root and the top starts to grow. When they are big enough you pull them up and pull them into. The tops have little bottoms on them that are edible or you can just eat the green top but I like to pull them apart and get the stem too. You can also just plant them in the garden. So don't throw sprouted onions away---grow them. Nothing is easier and it is fun to see them grow.
