How about another Apple Festival Giveaway?? Since we had so much fun with the first one, I am offering a second Giveaway with a distinct apple theme!!

Sign-ups start today September 14 and I will choose a winner on Monday September 24

Our Winner today is Kelly -lovinRchickens!!!! Please contact me Kelly for your mailing information.

More apple fun and goodness ready for a new home!! Leave me your name and just tell me your most favorite apple to eat. One of my favorites is the Fuji apple. Here is the history of this apple.

Thomas Jefferson was friends with the French Minister to the US., Edmund Genet, in 1793-1794. Mr. Genet sent Jefferson some apple cuttings of a french apple variety to his home at Monticello where Jefferson was experimenting with new and more successful apple varieties. Mr. Jefferson gave these apple cuttings from Mr. Genet to his friend, Caleb Ralls, who was a well known nurseryman over one county from him. Mr. Ralls grafted these french apple cuttings and developed the "Ralls-Genet" apple which became a favorite and successful apple that spread into the Ohio Valley. The apple was favored because it bloomed later and usually escaped late Winter frosts that were the demise of many of the apples at that time. The Ralls -Genet fell out of favor in the 1920s when agriculture decided to grow fewer varieties so that they could make them more useful for grocery store use.

However, in 1939, the Japanese crossed the Ralls-Genet with the favorite, Red Delicious and the resulting apple was named the FuJi apple. This apple was released into the American market in 1962, and the FuJi quickly overtook the Granny Smith as the third favorite apple in America.

Thomas Jefferson wanted three accomplishments listed on his gravestone: Author of the Declaration of Independence, Father of the University of Virginia, and Author of the Statues of Virginia for Religious Freedom (which became the foundation of our US Constitution).

I would add that he should have been given recognition as the founder of America's third most favorite apple!! LOL!! Of course nobody knew at Jefferson's death that his passing the apple cuttings to Mr. Caleb Ralls would end up as a HUGE market success!! Don't you think Mr. Jefferson would be proud and excited to know about his contribution to apple lovers of the world?? I think he would!! What do you think?

HI Kelly, I am so happy that your gift arrived safely and that you enjoyed all the surprises!! Yes, I took a plain red towel and added the decorations to make it how I wanted it to look. I also made the basket as well. While my basket making skills are limited, I love working with reeds and creating simple baskets that I can use to fill with whatever I need or wish to gift. The Johnny Appleseed prayer was always sung and since I can't send you how that sounds, I am glad you enjoyed the simple blessing for meals.

Thanks again to everyone who participated in our Apple Festival this year!! It was a lot of fun and I plan to indulge in all things apple this last weekend!! How about you?

I just received my apple box and the smells of the unopened box was intoxicating. I love the basket of goodies. It was just preciously arranged. In the box was a cinnamon broom, apple dumplin tart, yummy teas, Johnny Appleseed Blessing, (that I love!), cinnamon apple recipe, a precious towel and washcloth. Did you make the towel, Winnie? It's so sweet looking. I feel so blessed to have received this very special gift. Thank you dearly Winnie.

Me too, please!
I grew up on a farm that raised TONS and TONS of apples. Red Delicious and Gala are my favorite to eat fresh. Rome Beauties are my favorite for cooking with.

Welcome Farmgirls to the second Giveaway opportunity!!

I am enjoying hearing about your favorite apples too! With so many varieties, it is interesting to see what people find matches their taste the best. I wonder if apples are a global favorite as they are abundant everywhere you go in grocers and farmers' markets? I just Googled that question and here is what I found for America's favorite fruit in 2017: Bananas-73%, Apples-69%. We are gaining on bananas, Farmgirls!! LOL!! Let's see what happens in 2018 and I will post the results again next September.
