I was a member for a number of years here. I lived just outside Chicago - hence the name City Chick.

My husband has retired and we've moved south to Tennessee! I'm so happy out here in the country. Just getting my garden started and have learned that it's wayyyy different to garden in the country/woods than it was in my little plot in the city.

I see some names I remember. Can't wait to get reacquainted!

Debbie

Marjean, we have just a little under an acre. We're just north of Chattanooga. Cost of living is much lower here than what we had in Chicago. Property taxes went from $7,600 for a suburban yard. Here our taxes are $1,200 with land, woods & a lake across the road. Our utilities are lower, gas for the car is lower. It was the right decision for us. The only thing I've found that is a bit higher is food. Fresh produce is expensive at the grocery store so we go to farmers markets or farm stands and sometimes Aldi. More of a reason to garden!

I've been to Cloudland Canyon State Park. It's so beautiful there!

Tennessee doesn't have a state tax - we were looking in Georgia too in the beginning but decided that just over the border works too. Plus they have Tennessee Promise here - free community college with volunteer hours. I may go back to school one day.

That is so wonderful that you have a plot of land now in the country Deb.

I am trying to get my DH to sell and move us to the country but he is afraid that we won't find a place we like and can afford.

How big is your property? What part of TN are you in? I've wanted to move us to Northern GA near the TN line in a rural setting near Cloudland Canyon state park.

Some places call them Peter Pan - it's a small squash reminds me of a flying saucer. Tastes like yellow squash. It's fun to grow. I have flowers on my plant already.

Deb, I wish we could grow blueberries here. We eat so many and they are my oldest sons favorite fruit. We will be planting raspberries and blackberries when our yard is ready for them. Your garden sounds fabulous. I hope it has a great year.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Our new home is on a slope and it's very rocky. Hubby & I made raised beds out of cement block. Lined them with plastic and had organic soil delivered. So far I've got broccoli, chard, radishes, cauliflower, beets, cabbage, sweet peppers and tons of hot peppers for the hubby. Patty pan, cucumbers, beans and lots of tomatoes. Something has eaten all my okra sprouts. Not sure what since we have a 7' chicken wire fence around the garden. We have also put in raspberries & blueberries in another part of the yard along with 3 paw paw trees and just bought a "fruit cocktail" tree that is grafted for peaches & plums.

Besides gardening I love hiking, camping, campfires (hubby built a fire pit in the yard for me) Normally I love cooking & baking but I'm getting burnt out. I plan on doing canning in the fall. I enjoy embroidery but haven't done it since the move.

Well, thats me! thanks again for the welcome. I'm excited to be back.
