I want chickens really bad but the problem is I have a fear of birds. The flapping mostly. Hubby suggested getting chicks and I can start small and maybe I won't be afraid when they grow up.

I do have a daughter living with us who is not afraid and would help out - as well as my hubby.

I love the idea of having fresh eggs. What to do?

Ladies---I am having so much fun raising thirty baby chicks that I could-die laughing . They are great entertainment and easily petted and made to look like rubber chickens in you hand, So tiny and so sweet. No fear ladies---they are such good children. I love to kiss their tiny heads and they do not peck. Girls---if you are afraid of baby chicks or chickens---then you need to get MAD DOG MEAN like Clint Eastwood and face those little Killers---less they peck you to death...Girls---those babies can't peck a flea. Don't fear the chicken---they are great friends to know.

Deb, I haven’t owned chickens yet but have been wanting them. I’m still trying to convince my husband for this year so we shall see if he caves. But I am deep down a little scared that they will peck at me and it will hurt, but I keep trying to tell myself that it really can’t be that bad otherwise no one would own any. Plus the benefits of fresh eggs would outweigh the fear. Plus I agree with the other ladies. I bet they grow on us and we learn more about them everyday and before you know it we won’t be afraid anymore.

My older sister also has a phobia of birds, chickens in particular. One of my earliest memories was walking through our landlords pasture by the henhouse one winter and the chickens were outside. I was about 4 at the time and I recall talking to my sister when suddenly she just froze. I mean statue-like froze. It took me several minutes of tugging on her arm to finally get her feet moving to leave the area. She never got over her fear of birds but then she never tried anything. I say go with the suggestion of baby chicks. They are so adorable, who couldn't love them? Hopefully your fear will slip away as they grow and your daughter & husband can help out if it doesn't. Nothing beats farm fresh eggs, not even fear!

Best of luck with whatever you do decide.

Okay, you are not alone. I have a big phobia of anything -even butterflies - fluttering around near my head. That being said, I have had chickens for years now. They really do not flap that much, and if you get little chicks you will love them. I agree with Barbara - no Roos. They are trouble though my Cleo that I have now is a good roo - so far.

Having chickens is so rewarding, and they aren’t “fast” like a flying wild bird. They don’t flap much at all unless disturbed. Mostly they are gentle and sweet.

I have a friend who is afraid of birds because chickens pecked her legs when she was little. As for me--- I was raised around chickens and I have always loved them---they are such sweet and gentle birds. We are getting ready to raise thirty chicks the end of May. But do not ever get a rooster---they are mean and I have been attacked so many times----one attack made me fall to the ground---it felt like I was stabbed. Just stay with the hens---they are so sweet and gentle. You will love them. I raised a baby sparrow once and it was so sweet. Do not fear birds--they are gentle sweet creatures.
