I hope y'all can enlarge it ehough to read. And I learned this MANY years ago - before throwing away a pincushion tomato, carefully break it open. You will likely find MANY MANY MANY needles inside!

Judith, funny you mentioned the needles & tweezers...
Every time I score an old sewing basket, first thing I do is grab a magnet and tweezers,, and pull out/up the sewing needles that have worked their way down in the puffy lid where pins and needles were poked into for keeping handy.
Lol!

When I was a child my mother would let me "squeeze" the needles and pin out of the tomato. Tweezers help save your fingers.

I never knew this about the tomato pincushion either. I have one that belonged to my Mom. It was in her sewing machine drawer when she gave me her machine before she moved into assisted living. Thanks Jean for posting this very interesting bit of history! I enjoyed learning about it.

My late mother had a tomato pincushion. Thanks for showing me the picture of yours, it helped me remember when my mom used to sew when I was a small child.

Thats interesting. adding that to a list of things I never thought of.
Something to learn everyday. Now every time I see a tomato pin cushion
I will think of that.

Thanx for sharing Jean, what a sweet folk lore,,,
Remember buying those wicker sewing baskets, they came with a plastic measuring tape, tomato pin cushion a thimble and some needles.
I don't think the new/modern sewing baskets come with anything now.

Jean, that is neat. I know my mom has one of those. I will have to pass this information on to her.

Interesting Jean, I never knew that. But, not sure I want to open the ones I have collected over the years. But then again I maybe desperate for a needle one day!
Thank you for sharing.
