I'm thinking of having a tea garden this year. It might actually wind up being some herbs planted in pots rather than an actual garden this year though. I have some mint growing already. What other herbs for tea have you had luck with or want to try? Do you buy plants or seeds?

I'll have to go get some pictures taken. It's not all in one spot like I would love to do one day. But it's growing! That's all the matters :)

Karen - wildcrafting is going out in nature and getting what's there growing wild rather than planting it in your garden or flowerbed. We have a couple woods and pastures and fence rows that grow all kinds of useful things now that I've started identifying what those "weeds" are LOL!

Love the idea of a tea garden. I was actually able to grow chamomile from seed this year…currently it’s drowning in weeds because it’s too hot to be outside.

I don't have the tea garden I picture in my mind but I do have a nice little variety of herbs planted for tea this year. As well as some for cooking. I hope you do plant a tea garden April! My mint isn't doing so well this winter but I have so much from last year it's alright :)
I ended up getting some lemon balm, lemon thyme, lemon verbena, sage, rosemary, basil, parsley, borage, and catnip (didn't go well - the cats ate it all!) to add to my already established mint, oregano, and chives. I also have been looking at wildcrafting and have dried some of the alfalfa and red clover from the field and muelin (not sure of the spelling) from the woods. I'm also going to dry some blackberry leaves. I might purchase some dried chamomile to add to my herbs since I couldn't find any this spring.

Heather, what a sweet idea, I love it! I actually grew some peppermint this year and it's doing great. I grow sage for tea as well, helps with sore throat when I'm a little run down or sick. Comforting. I think I will expand and grow a tea garden now after reading thru this thread... you ladies are all so inspiring.

Heather, I grow many herbs in pots, and in the winter, I bring them in to our south facing window and enjoy all winter long! So, I say, go for it! |

Down here in Florida, Lemon Thyme grows pretty well and it is wonderful to put into scones or shortbread that will go nicely with tea.

Dianna - I have had lemon grass in the past but I've never had lemon balm. If I can only do one which one do you prefer?
Sara - I have oregano for cooking but I never made it into tea before. I should try it and see what it tastes like. I think containers count as gardens too. I just have a picture in my head of a tea garden set up with a table and chairs for enjoying a cuppa tea in my tea garden. It's not going to happen this year though. I should look into rosehips. Roses would be a great addition!

Heather, I grow chocolate, peppermint, and strawberry mints. I like chocolate mint in coffee.
I also grow herbs that do double duty as healing herbs for tea to have on hand for the on-set of a cold. Rosemary, thyme, sage, Greek oregano, and spearmint. My heirloom container roses have rosehips so they are good in healing teas - they are hi in V C.
Rosemary is the only herb I have in the ground. All other herbs are in containers or raised beds.
I perfer plants but will use seeds for a herb I can't find locally. Have fun planning and planting your herb garden. To me my container plants are my gardens.

I love lemon balm! Its great for the health of your eyes and especially in older people who have 'floaties'. I also grow lemon grass for teas also, in the garden. Since its an old fashioned garden on the ground I use organic starter plants.
