A freighter's payload explodes and wipes out Texas City
Ammonium nitrate fertilizer catches fire on a vessel in Galveston Bay and explodes, flattening much of the town of Texas City, Texas. The disaster will kill nearly 600 and wound over 3,000, becoming the worst industrial accident in US history.

I was five years old when it happened and remember people talking about the disaster years after it happened. From time to time The History Channel runs a documentary on Texas City.

After the eye surgery I had to go into the accessibility settings on my phone and change to large test. It really helps.

Oh gosh, I was reading this early this morning on my phone. I thought it said James Hook! I need to stop reading the tiny print using my phone. Lol!

Captain Hook was purely fictional. Barrie created him for his book Peter Pan. I remember the very real Captain Cook as the person responsible for bringing mosquitoes to Hawaii.

Captain James Cook makes an accidental discovery.

English explorer Captain James Cook's ship runs aground off the coast of Australia, in the world's largest coral reef system. The Great Barrier Reef was already well-known to the Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Big Brother is watching you as '1984' is published.

Newspeak, thoughtcrimes, and Big Brother are introduced as George Orwell's vision of a dystopian future is published. 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' will be seen as both a great literary work and an accurate warning of the "double plus ungood" rise of totalitarianism and surveillance.

Young Men's Christian Association offers London refuge

George Williams, formerly of rural Somerset, England, and now working as a draper in London, is shocked by the decadence of city life and so opens the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) to give other Industrial Revolution laborers a wholesome alternative to taverns and brothels.

America's car and movie mania meet in New Jersey

Richard Hollingshead opens his "automobile movie theatre" in Camden County, New Jersey, featuring 400 car slots, a 40-x-50-foot screen, and three 6-foot speakers. The feature at the first US drive-in theater is 'Wives Beware,' with admission costing a quarter per car and customer.

Allied invasion of Europe begins

Four years and two days after Allied forces evacuated from the European mainland, they return in the Normandy landings, the largest amphibious military assault in history. By the end of the day, 5,000 vessels land 160,000 troops on the French coastline, launching the push to defeat Germany.

The Milton Berle Show features a scandalous Elvis.

New singing sensation Elvis Presley makes his second appearance on NBC's 'Milton Berle Show,' this time to perform his single 'Hound Dog.' Teenagers swoon, while the older set and most critics are outraged at Presley's indecent gyrations. Future TV gigs will film Elvis from the waist up.

Mom let me stay home from school to watch the coronation. We had the only tv in the neighborhood (my father built it) and Mom and several neighbor ladies watched it. I felt so sorry for her with that heavy crown on her head; when I heard how heavy it was I got our biggest book -- Birds of America-- and tried to sit with it on my head. She is a truly amazing woman. England has been fortunate to have her. Charles has a lot to live up to.

Notorious outlaw couple gunned down in Louisiana.

A stolen Ford Deluxe is met with a hail of bullets as it passes an ambush of lawmen lying in wait on a rural highway in Louisiana's Bienville Parish. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow's car is hit by 130 rounds, and the FBI's most wanted criminals are brought down after a 2-year manhunt.

I grew up hearing stories about Bonnie and Clyde. We lived on California Crossing Road and Hwy 119 crossed it in far west Dallas County. Bonnie and Clyde used Hwy 119 to drive between Dallas and Grapevine to escape the Dallas sheriff. History was all around me and as a child I didn't know it. Not all the history was bad. Going west on California Crossing Road it crossed Goodnight Lane, named after Charlie Goodnight, who was a rancher who drove his cattle to market on that road. California Crossing Road was named after the pioneers who crossed the Trinity River on their way to California.

I do get round-up when it comes to Texas history.
