My husband and I are thinking of getting chickens next spring. He had them growing up and we have experience with owning ducks. My question is this…what is your favorite backyard chicken breed? We are looking for egg production and friendliness. We won’t be eating the chickens because I’m too much of a softie for that. :)

Julie, Thanks so much!! I really appreciate everyone’s feedback. They will definitely be a part of our family! :)

I love my buff orpingtons, they are very friendly. But they are a dual purpose bird so they are a little on the larger size and they go broody a lot. My red sex links are super friendly and great layers. They run across the yard when they see me outside and like to “chat”.

A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

I like white leghorns. They are steady layers of decent size white eggs. I haven't bought store bought eggs in 10 years.

I dont have anything fancy, my chickens are called blacks or browns, from sunnyside hatchery. I get 20 every 2 years. They are very good brown egg layers.

Several years ago, I had 3 golden sex-link, and I loved having them but had to give them up when I got Annie. My little back yard wasn't big enough for Annie and the chickens. They were good layers, brown eggs, and would sit on my lap to eat out of my hand.

We had Black Sex Link and Black Austrolorps. Both are excellent layers. The Black Sex link are the friendly ones. Mine used to follow me everywhere.
I also had a couple of Rhode Island Reds. They were a lot of fun. We had lots of chats and petting sessions. I do miss having my girls.
