Happy St. Patrick's day lovely farmsisters!!

St. Patrick was actually British, born to Roman parents in either Scotland or Wales (no one is exactly sure which). After being forced into slavery by Irish pirates, he turned to his Christian faith and became one of the first people to bring the religion to the country in the fifth century, around the year 432.
Historians say that St. Patrick's color was blue, not green. The use of green on the holiday became common during the 1600s and 1700s, when the clover became a symbol of nationalism and wearing green on lapels became the norm.

And to boot: Leprechauns weren't associated with St. Patrick's Day until recently. In 1959, Darby O'Gill and the Little People was released, a Disney film about an old Irish man and his leprechaun friends. The movie was released right as St. Patrick's Day parades were becoming more common. So, it just happened naturally: Leprechauns became a staple in St. Patrick's Day festivities.
Anyway you look at it, its become a tradition! So enjoy your green beer or tea, green eggs & ham, cabbage and cornbread, however you celebrate!! Happy St. Patricks Day!!

Dianna,
Have you read "Let Me Die in Ireland" ? Excellent book about Patrick's life.

Thanks Dianna. I too thought leprechauns had been a part of it a lot longer than that. It's crazy to think how much the holiday has evolved over the years. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Thanks Dianna, and Happy St. Patrick's Day to you as well!! I enjoyed learning about the Leprechaun connection as well as the green color history both being parts of the St. Patty's Day celebration today.

Thank you Dianna, I never knew about the Leprechauns, I always thought they were a symbol as well.
I did know St. Patrick’s story as I have read a book of his life, it was very interesting.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day Everyone.
