If you see one of these things in your garden,, be happy…
What is it you ask?…
Well soon as the weather gets warmer… a bunch of little Praying-mantis we’ll be hatching from this cocoon…

2 years ago I spotted one and had no clue… it was on the side of the house by my Rose bushes..
This one is out by my garden by the lavender bushes..
I contacted the Garden Editor of our local newspaper. She recently published a book on Garden insects and pests… so I knew she would know what it was.

I will have to keep my eye on it to see when the baby Praying-mantis hatch.
I am going to be a Grandma to a bunch of baby-mantis! :>)

Well Grace, here in Texas the wee ones won't know when to break out. One day it's cold the next day it's in the 80s. Been that way all spring up & down.

Oh Sara,, up here in Eastern Washington, they probably won't hatch until June when the weather stays consistently warm and around 70 degrees. Not sure about Texas...

Grace, that doesn't surprise me. We have had a couple over the years who have been a little aggressive and have run after us. It's actually quite funny to watch a praying mantis chase a child lol! Because they do look a little scary.

Krista,, yep, they do love 'chirps' and pesty bugs.. but they are also 'opportunists... and sometimes go after beneficial bugs too!

We have them all over the front of the house. I looked them up last fall to figure out what they were. I left all of mine alone and I can't wait until they hatch. They like to hang around on our front porch and most likely eat all the crickets we have.

Oh Sara,, that is funny about the baby mantis... I am constantly 're-locating' them to an area I feel is safer and more beneficial for them..

I've never seen the cocoons but I have seen a swarm of baby praying mantises. When my son was still in day care praying mantises hatched on my carport. They were teeny and covered the concrete. At that time I drove a blue ford pickup truck and the next morning when I was pulling out of the carport Dustin yelled for me to stop. He was afraid I was going to run over the babies. I had to explain to him that I couldn't see the babies and they had probably gone to the back yard by then.

I see one now and then but not like I used to. They seem to be having the same troubles as bees and butterflies. Speaking of butterflies, the milkweed I planted is doing nicely and I hope a monarch or two finds it. Grace that cocoon is so cool.

Heather, this one is just shy of 2"...

Dianna, Ironically, mantis can be both beneficial and a terror..

I am constantly re-lolcating them in the summer time.. We have both Tan and green ones, I suspect due to what they are eating.

We have them too, Grace! When I find one, it always makes me smile! I love the garden protection from the praying-mantis but, I’m not gonna lie, they creep me out a bit.. especially when they when their head to watch you! Lol :)

Heather, the ones we see here range but most are about 3/4” wide by 1 3/4 - 2’ long.

How big is it Grace? It's hard to tell in the picture. I'd love to see if I can find one around my place. There were a few in the garden so I'm sure there's got to be one somewhere....
I hope you get to see the babies hatching out of it! That would be an amazing site for sure.
