Posted - Jun 13 2008 : 9:01:44 PM I've never attached edging to a pillowcase (or Farmgirl Sisterhood badge in this case) and I'd like to learn. I've read the steps in MJ's stitching book, but I'm still befuddled. Do I need to crochet an edging first and then sew it on? I thought I could just crochet it directly on to the raw edge, but then what about that raw edge?
Crochetingly confused,

Posted - Jun 24 2008 : 4:04:10 PM Sherri -- Thanks for the wing needle idea! I even have one of those needles already; just haven't tried it out yet. I also have an old hemstitching gadget for my sewing machine but haven't really gotten the hang of it. Most of my embroideries have the hemstitched edge already but some don't and zigzagging a satin stitch on them doesn't give them the look I want.

Posted - Jun 16 2008 : 10:47:32 AM In the "old days" (when I was learning to crochet!), pillowcases and table runners came with a hemstitched edge, that you crocheted directly into - little holes with stitching around them. You can replicate that edging to crochet into by using a wing needle on your machine and using a long stitch - some machines have a special hemstitch. The wing needle makes a little hole in the fabric to insert the hook into. Just make sure you do the hemstitching about 1/2 inch away from the raw edge because if you get too close it will still ravel. Then when you're done stitching, cut away any extra.

Posted - Jun 14 2008 : 1:33:11 PM I love to crochet or knit lace by the yards and then; I will have the edging ready to put on aprons , etc, I put a crochet shell edging with a pitco adding to my aprons. I like a lot of detail to the aprons I make My deceased Grandmother could not read crochet she taught me how to do just the basics I had to learn to read it myself The shell crocheted edgings was one of the firs things she taught me. Posted - Jun 14 2008 : 11:25:01 AM Thanks for the advice. What I ended up doing was putting a running stitch around the edge of the badge, then doing a modified crochet chain into each of the stitches on the top of the badge (one single, one chain per stitch). Finally, I tatted into that crochet base for a scalloped edge. I'll post a picture of it as soon as I can. It probably isn't the neatest method, but it worked. :-)

Posted - Jun 14 2008 : 08:50:21 AM I saw an interesting tablecloth with crocheted edging the other day at my quilt group meeting It had crochet edging that had been attached to the blanket stitch edging on the cloth, and it looked really nice. I don't know if that is any help, it just looked like a good idea to me, Karin

Posted - Jun 14 2008 : 06:36:36 AM Either! When I do Handkerchiefs I attach directly, its really how you prefer. If you sew it on it can be recycled later. You turn the raw edge in and sew it down before doing either. Have fun and good luck.
