Hi,
In (hopefully) the near future, we will be moving to SC. We are looking to be near Saluda County for our family of 9. I was just looking up the homeschool rules and they seem pretty understandable, but I was wondering if any of you are in the know and can help me understand it any better. For example, it seems that my options are to go through the public school system by applying and proving myself throughout the year, going through the scaihs group, or being a part of the virtual program. My younger children could not do the virtual program and I am leaning toward the scaihs. I have been homeschooling for 13 years in CT and there really has not been a bother from the school system at all. I do want my kids to have an official document and accountability. Anyway, any thoughts and suggestions from people with experience would be appreciated.

Our process for deciding to move to Wyoming was pretty extensive. We listed all 50 states and started crossing states off as they did not align with our wants/needs. For example the first thing we looked at was what handful of states do not recognize my hubby's Biblical counseling schooling/license. Then we crossed off states where it is too "difficult" to homeschool or that requires standarized testing. Then we crossed off the states that are too restrictive regarding gun laws. We also looked at raw milk laws, VBAC laws, and the like. We were left with Texas and Wyoming. We wanted four seasons and one of our children has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, so humidity is an issue... so we ended up going with Wyoming. Hubby is retiring from the Air Force in the very near future, so we will soon be off :) But A LOT is still in the air! Totally trusting God <3

A homeschool (parent) issued diploma is just as legal and binding as a public school one. :)

Thanks Shannon. I'll check it out. We have just an appointment from God to move and all the other stuff we are just walking in faith for. Near Saluda county because of Hope Chapel in Batesburg. We feel a kinship there. It may be long term or temporary. I am trying to prepare what I can ahead of time. I wish we were moving soon and I know that it will work out at some point. Why are you guys moving to Wyoming? Do you all have everything in place to move or are you uncertain of some things too?

Jackie - If you are after just saying yup we did 180 days of school, check out PACESC at pacesc.com It is only $40 for the family, for the year :) And I certainly do not see how they could decline your homeschool diploma :) It is who we have gone through for the last however many years :)

We are indeed moving out of state - headed to Wyoming :) We are looking at moving by mid October... any chance you will be here before then? It would have been so wonderful to get together!!!! Why Saluda County? (just wondering!)

Well thanks ladies. That sounds nice to be able to just prove my 180 days and subjects. Although my diploma is from my homeschool teacher.... does that count? And Shannon, you were my first MJF contact. Are you moving out of state then? It would have been nice to craft together. I don't know if you remember me but I have seven children and our kids were around the same ages. If you guys hear of any inexpensive housing options for us I would be interested. We make due with 4 bedrooms.

We homeschool in SC.... Though we are getting ready to move. What are you looking for as far as accountability? Here in SC one of the options is to be in an accountability group. These can be as strict as sending in your curriculum and test scores, etc, to as loose as just saying yes I have a GED or HS diploma (and send them a notarized copy) and joining the group... and then at the end of your 180 days of teaching sending a "end of the year compliance form" in saying you met the states requirements of schooling for 180 days and the required subjects. You are welcome to PM me for more information :) Or I can answer any of your questions on here :) We have been homeschooling since our oldest started (now 13) here in SC... we are down near Charleston :)

you legally can officially document and be the officially accountable. I believe one of SC options are joining a umbrella.. there are some as cheap as 10 dollars I believe. I think I would look up the state homeschool advocacy group and talk to them, as well as contact HSLDA. (I'm in Kansas, but have a few friends in SC).
