Posted - Dec 30 2020 : 12:50:07 PM It’s true! Soon we’ll be releasing our new Merit Badges. I’ve been working on the badge designs since last week and today and and tomorrow hope to finalize our Dec. MaryJanesFarm Sister Issue, which is where we always announce new Merit Badges every year. If all goes as planned, they’ll show up in your inbox in our Sister Issue the morning of the first day of 2021. Stay tuned.

Posted - Aug 29 2020 : 06:10:16 AM Thank you Krista. I also have a lot of badges to work on since I am new here. Winnie- butternut is my favorite squash so that pumpkin sounds good to me! I had squash bugs so bad last year that I decided not to plant any squash this year. Next year I will try again.

Posted - Aug 28 2020 : 11:06:13 AM Add me to the list for the Pumpkin Badge! Down here in Florida, the traditional carving pumpkins don't grow. But we grow what is called a Seminole Pumpkin which belongs to the Cucurita Moschata variety that also includes the butternut squash. While the Seminole pumpkin is orange and looks like a pumpkin, the inside meat is almost identical to the butternut squash in color and taste. This variety of pumpkin is the only one that can survive the relentless heat and humidity of a Florida Summer. Boy do they make a delicious pie!

Posted - Aug 25 2020 : 4:14:04 PM I'm a newer member and have the Merit Badge planner. I love it. I look through it almost daily. I see some great ideas here for new merit badges. For the beach/water badge I would add streams & ponds. Researching water pollution and what laws or ordinances there may be in your area to prevent water pollution. I like the fermentation badge idea. Maybe start with water kefir - the Aug/Sept 2020 issue of Mary Jane's Farm has and article "Ferment it!" Kombucha scares me so leave that out - haha. Another idea - Medicinal Herbs. Study the medicinal value of 2 or 3 herbs. What medicinal herbs can you grow where you live, what might be growing wild near your home. What are dandelions good for. What parts of the plant are used. Make an herbal tea using medicinal herbs. Use medicinal herbs in cooking. Learn definition of tincture, menstruum, poultice. I studied herbal medicine so I can come up with more ideas for this one.

Posted - Apr 24 2020 : 7:55:55 PM Thank you Krista. I am not a very big reader. I truly enjoy writing and Math. As you may guess, I am a teacher. I teach math and science. Last quarter I took a class on church polity. I did not read the extra reads. But, seeing as they are non-fiction, they qualify and I think it is a good idea to go ahead and read at least one of them.

Posted - Mar 03 2020 : 9:44:36 PM I like the plastic canvas, not to costly yet beautiful items can be made. I also love the pumpkin ideas! Maybe incorporate gifting a home baked pumpkin goodie in true farmgirl fashion? I would love to learn to weave, also want to learn to tat, cannot figure it out from videos, cannot find anyone to tech me. Some day.
Great ideas you all have.

Posted - Mar 02 2020 : 1:30:23 PM Krista - I haven't done any diamond painting, but am hoping to, one day. Other ideas could be weaving or whittling.

Posted - Mar 02 2020 : 12:50:27 PM Shannon I like the pumpkin one. That would definitely be something I would be interested in. Also the diamond painting one. I love to do diamond painting and would definitely work on that badge. The pressure cooker one sound interesting too. I’m really enjoying these ideas you have!

Posted - Mar 02 2020 : 08:35:18 AM Plastic canvas badge.... Beginner: Start with something small, that doesn't require attaching pieces together, such as a coaster set, using at least three different stitches (including the overcast stitch to "finish" the sides) Intermediate: Make a project that requires attaching pieces, such as a jewelry box or tissue box cover, using two new stitches. Expert: Make a 3D project, such as a sculpted eagle. Also, teach another person how to craft with plastic canvas.
Pumpkin badge.... you could plant pumpkins, use your pumpkins to make a desert, use your pumpkins to make each of the three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
Another idea... diamond painting seems to be all the rage right now... you could do something with that. Or sewing clothing, starting with something simple, such as a skirt with elastic, then doing something with button holes, and then maybe a zipper. Ancient grain challenge Pressure cooking challenge

Posted - Feb 27 2020 : 09:44:07 AM I am loving the new binder! I had all of my badge info printed off and it has been in a much larger binder but it was kind of heavy and awkward. This new binder is so much nicer! I thumbed through the badge requirements and got reacquainted with the badges that I had been working on. I am really excited to get going again....just what I needed for some inspiration! Shannon....I am all over your Pie Badge idea!!!!

Posted - Feb 26 2020 : 2:07:06 PM My merit badge binder arrived. Glanced through it and excited to get started! Shared by discussion, with my group last night they were excited as well, however last night was our group meeting, so they need to wait a month to see it!
Good luck to each as you work on yours.

Posted - Feb 24 2020 : 06:51:32 AM I ordered my merit badge planner. So excited! Not sure when it will arrive so until it does, deep cleaning rooms so I have a little time to work on them when it arrives. I really like the idea of a planner, I had printed it off before and placed into a binder but this way I have the updated version.
