so I was looking online in regards to garlic scapes..and saw an article that was contributed to by Mary Jane..about how the garlic scapes are in season the last few weeks of June..mostly the 3rd week of June...which is right now!
So my question is this?? does the farm offer the little wee scape bulbets for sale? or is that just through the local market area there in Moscow?
I'm currently growing some garlic chives in a large terra cotta pot(the huge clump of garlic chives were recently given to me by a person I bought some daylilies from )He informed me that the garlic chive would also send up little "scapes"..but I expect that my crop of them will not do so until next year.
Anyhow..I'd be interested in knowing where to buy some garlic scapes for growing if possible.

Tina, I may be wrong, but I've harvested mine already from hardneck (I think) varieties of garlic. The softneck variety doesn't produce them...or it's the other way around, but they're grown from regular garlic. The reason I say I'm not sure which is because the one that I thought would produce them didn't, and the one that I didn't expect to, did  I think I have my signs backwards--well, I planted garlic in October, Lord only knows what I did back then!!!

I plated garlic las fall & right on schedule, I have had scapes out the waazoo!! I put in foil packs w/olive oil, & ground pepper & salt & they are delish!! I don't think scapes are a separate thing(correct me if I am wrong), they come from already planted maturing garlic.

| Last year was the first time we grew garlic. Being uninformed, I guess, I had no idea what to do with them, if anything at all. We ended up putting them in our compost. Whoops! Glad to know they're tasty! I think we still have some on the stalks (I didn't quite harvest all the garlic last year. . .apparently! Some came up this year again!) |

hi,
well I know the scapes are like the "flower head" that the garlic sends up before the garlic starts maturing fully..before harvesting the garlic bulbs..but I was actually under the impression that around the 3rd week of June is when the folks at MJFarm in Moscow start gathering the scapes..now my question was..can you dry the scapes and gather the tiny little "mini cloves" from those? Instead of gathering the big full sized bulbs...meaning..I want to be able to plant eensy/tiny garlic bulbs for the smaller garlics...does this make sense? I want to be able to grow small garlic in a pot on a patio..something that will produce a small crop, but tender shoots and small "scapes".
..but I didn't want a full size clove to plant, but rather a petite size bulbet.
Like what you'd get from an undersized garlic..and I was wondering if the scapes could be sold as "dried" versions of "baby garlics"??And do they produce little teensy "cloves"?
Hope my questions now make sense.

o.k...well..here I am answering my own questions..ha..I have a habit of asking a question then doing some research as soon as I ask a question..ha.
O.k. the scapes can be dried, but usually aren't until they have straightened out on the stems/ when the scapes have started growing straighter(from what I've been reading anyhow) and the little bulbils can be dried and planted....but it can take up to 3 yrs to have a full sized garlic bulb produced from the tiny "scape" bulbils. O.k...well that answered part of the question....
the other part was..does the MJFarm actually sell the little "scape bulbils" or just the full size garlic bulbs? I know they list the full size bulbs in the shop online here, but did not know if they actually sell the smaller little bulbils? If not..then I will just be ordering the full sized bulbs at some point down the road...but thought I'd ask seeing as it is close to harvest time from what I had gathered.
(As mentioned previously..I was recently given a large clump of garlic chives..which is different than the garlic..it is like the grassy looking chives we are used to but has a very strong garlicy smell and does produce small "scapes" on it...but looks like grass)

TIna, I think the scape "bulb" has what would be the equivalent of seeds inside, & you would probably just end up with that kind of garlic, not just scapes. I think..Anyone at MJ's farm that knows for sure let us know

LOL right..I know..see my question was..does the farm sell the smaller bulbils..the tiny seeds bulbils from the scapes..instead of just the full sized garlic bulbs?? that's the question.
I do understand that the bulbils/tiny seeds will eventually produce the exact same type of garlic..given the 3 yr growth period to grow to maturity from seed.
I was wanting to begin the garlic from this seed stage..using smaller than clove sized seeds(the seeds taken from the flower head, not the actual bottom of the plant bulb/cloves but the smaller seeds derived from the flowers)..using the tiny bulbils....to develop the more tender grasses/growth first....I figured that if the bulb was left in the ground one could still glean the growth from the top and let the bulb continue to grow while still being able to harvest the top grasses...I understand now that the scapes would probably not be seen or developed on the plant until the seed reaches a full developmental growth of about 3 yrs as is typical of most allium..they do not flower until the 3rd year when the bulb has matured.
So..it may be possible?? to glean the tender 1st and 2nd yr growth off of the bulb....that was the other part of the question.....
I'm not just interested in growing garlic directly from the full sized clove development...but from the very tiny bulbils....the longer process of things if you will.
And my questions involved more about that process..the 1st and 2nd years growth on the bulbils before it reaches the 3rd yr of maturity.
Anyhow..I guess it is hard to describe my question online.
I will just continue to do my own research..because I understand what I'm trying to learn about and ask..it is sometimes hard for me to put it into words on paper/or computer.
