I planted two celery plants this year, while trying to plant a tomato "salsa" garden...the plants did beautifully but are very bitter and not for consumption...(oh why couldn't those horn worms have liked my celery better than my tomatoes????) My peppers were pathetic as well.

Any thoughts on making celery grow better?

Celery need lots of water or it will get bitter. It is somethin like 95% water, kinda like cucumbers. Do try again next year. I grow mine for drying to put in soups throughout the year.

I hate those worms, too. They were all over our tomatoe plants, they even get on the elephant ear plants. Gross!

I grow some celery, and I use 6 inch pieces of pvc pipe for it to grow in. I put the pipe over top of the plants when I plant them. I don't know if that would help the bitterness or not. I then cut the celery, and freeze it to use over the winter in soups or whatever.
