THEN LAUGH
by Bertha Adams Backus

Build for yourself a strong box,
Fashion each part with care;
Put all your troubles there;
Hide there all thought of your failures,
And each bitter cup that you quaff;
Lock all your heartaches within it,
Then sit on the lid and laugh.

Tell no one else its contents,
Never its secrets share;
When you've dropped in your care and worry
Keep them forever there;
Hide them from sight so completely
That the world will never dream half;
Fasten the strong box securely -
Then sit on the lid and laugh.

Myself
By Egdar Guest

I have to live with myself and so
I want to be fit for myself to know.
I want to be able as days go by,
always to look myself straight in the eye;
I don't want to stand with the setting sun
and hate myself for the things I have done .
I don't want to keep on a closet shelf
a lot of secrets about myself
and fool myself as I come and go
into thinking no one else will ever know
the kind of person I really am,
I don't want to dress up myself in sham.
I want to go out with my head erect
I want to deserve all men's respect;
but here in the struggle for fame and wealth
I want to be able to like myself.
I don't want to look at myself and know that
I am bluster and bluff and empty show .
I never can hide myself from me;
I see what others may never see;
I know what others may never know,
I never can fool myself and so,
whatever happens I want to be
self respecting and conscience free.

I have lots of poems that mean something to me and I think yours fall in that catagory Marianne.

Two very meaningful ones to me are found in the Country Women book. Great book every farmgirl should have it.

GrandMother

Sometimes in my dreams
I still see my Kentucky grandmother
thin, strong and hungry
holding out her egg money to me
saying,
Buy land, Mary, buy land
buy land while it lasts
they stopped making it.
Mary Mackey 1974

Outrageous

I want to live to be
an outregeous old woman
who is never accused of being
an old lady

I want to live to have ten thousand lovers
in one love
one 70-year-long-loving-love.
There are at least two of me

I want to get leaner and meaner
sharp edged
color of the ground
til I discorporate
from sheer joy.

Mary Beth -
Who is the author of the country women book? I found several books with that in the title when I searched online...

Marianne, the book is called Country Women---A handbook for the new farmer.
Jeanne Tetrault & Sherry Thomas Anchor Books

I got this from a friend in 1979---golly I have had this for 30 years.
It is a must have whether you are rural or urban. MB
