Ok, I made the Bath Bombs from the recipe in this months MJF issue and I obviously did something wrong. It mixed up beautifully and there was no problem putting the mix in molds (I used muffin pans). BUT, for some reason, they started to rise. I tried squishing them down but they kept rising. I left them alone for several hours only to find that they actually looked like muffins from rising even more. THEN, I couldn't get them out of the mold as they were so sticky. I was able to salvage some of it and roll in to balls. They looked so pitiful and something that I would only use for myself. I did put some in the bath the other night and it really was quite amazing. I'm just wondering if someone could tell me what I did wrong here and I would be open to ANY tips for making stuff like this. Thanks!

Howdy neighbor! I just love this place, don't you? So much helpful info everywhere and everyone is so kind. I can't believe that I didn't hear about MJF sooner.

I know, right? Only I *did* hear about it, but didn't really start participating until a week or so ago, but as one of my other friends noted to me last night, since a lot of the people we know tend to think we're slightly crazy, it's really nice to get on here and find "virtual" sisters who are just as nuts! ;-) where in Cali are you? I moved to TN from LA about 5 1/2 years ago (almost 6! where does time go...)

I'm north of San Francisco. It's so beautiful in this neck of the woods. I have only been to L.A. a couple of times and the first time I actually went into the city was completely overwhelming. So much of everything, everywhere. I was able to enjoy it a bit more the second time but wow! I guess I've been in the woods too long, lol. And yes, in this 'place,' we are in good company:)

Holly - I think the further north you go in California the prettier it gets - back about 1972 I drove up Hwy 101 with my mom & brother from LA to Seattle and the drive was amazing.

Anna - I'm from the LA area also, spent most of my younger years in San Pedro and Redondo Beach. I have lived in North Carolina for about 35 years now and I really do like it here. I miss my family in LA but it is a bit overwhelming when I go visit.

I know you ladies will enjoy it here!

Kathy, my parents still live in Redondo Beach! I actually love the South Bay if one could just stay there... problem was I commuted to Pasadena, Walnut, and Hacienda Heights area between work and grad school on a regular basis and that was something else :-P Loved driving up PCH to S.F. tho... so pretty! My Husband's from Asheville, NC, so we've got a connection to your new state too ;-), tho I have no idea where Gastonia is...

Small world huh, my mom & sister live in Torrance now, brothers have moved inland a little.

I'm off I85 just south of Charlotte and just a couple miles from the South Carolina line.

Asheville is so beautiful. We have some property in the mountains about half way between Charlotte and Asheville, hope to retire there in a few years.

That's funny! My brother and his wife live in Brea, so they went inland too, more because of where they work than anything else. yes, small world indeed.

Hi Holly.
I'm so sorry you had trouble making our bath bombs! Actually, that was a recipe from last year's (Feb 2010) Cluck newsletter. We asked Irene at Mountain Rose Herbs, who sent us the recipe, about it and here's her reply:

The problem is with adding too much moisture and making the mixture too wet, which happens really quickly and easily. Here is a really good tutorial on making bath bombs that discusses common problems and how to solve them: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf78801539.tip.html The rising, stickiness, and difficulty removing them from the molds are all results of too much moisture. I have also read that it is better to use Witch Hazel Extract instead of water because it wets while also having drying properties, but I have not tried it yet.

There are many different recipes and ways to make bath bombs, but the reactions occur because of the Citric Acid responding to the moisture. The Citric Acid is also what causes the bath bombs to fizz in the bathtub, so omitting it would make them a lot easier to create, but would also eliminate the fizz.

Hope this helps.
Thanks for alerting us to this problem, Holly!

Thank you so much for the information Carol, I really appreciate it! I guessed that it was too wet. I also think humidity had something to do with it. That link is also very helpful. Thanks again.
