I did it. I went and bought a hoosier. Well, a Sellers cabinet to be exact. It needs restored. Anyone else restored one before? I'm not big on wood working (I prefer metal) but it doesn't look too bad. Mostly any areas that were plywood of any kind are pretty well gone. Anyone ever seen/heard of/discovered ways to make the flour bins usable for flour again on these old cabinets? There's quite a bit of rust that I'd rather not have in my flour. I wonder if there is a food safe clear coat you could apply? I've also thought about building me a new one out of stainless.

I'm excited to begin this journey! Any help would be appreciated.

For the bins you might want to scrub them down, get rid of any rust and then paint with something that is food safe or get it done professionaly if you can. Perhaps even find a local metal smith that might be able to help you. Since you like metal, perhaps use the old boxes as a pattern for some new ones.

Good luck and post pictures, I love Hoosiers.

Thanks Emily! Any ideas for food safe coatings? I promise I'll get some photos up after I move. I'm kind of in the middle of the beginning of one/two moves. I know that is a confusing sentence but there is just no way to explain it quickly. :)

I love my Sellers hoosier. It had been painted before I got it, and the knobs replaced with something very '50's looking. I use it to hold cook books and canning equipment, so I havent tried much restoration. I just love it the way it is.

Scrub them and then spray them with Rust-Oleum spray paint ...
It worked great on mine ... It was my Mother's Hoosier

Weren't those old metal flour bins made of tin? If so, the seams were probably joined with lead solder, which of course is quite toxic. I would think twice before putting anything edible in there, even if you somehow got it clean.

You can buy replacement bins, but the manufacturer says that even though they are lead-free, they are difficult to clean and they don't recommend using them for food storage. That might be just a super-cautious legal statement, but you might want to give it some thought. Here's where I found the info: "http://www.hardwaretree.com/proddetail.php?prod=SHB-11

Thanks for the ideas and the link. The lead solder etc. is what I'm worried about but I really want to be able to use the bins. Keeping 25 pounds of flour around in other containers isn't much fun.

Hi Kat,

My Dad restored my Grandma's Hoosier for me. He was able to get replacement hinges and other hardware from Restorers Catalog. They even had the little plaque that says Hoosier and the holes to attach it fit perfectly in the holes already in the front of the cupboard. There should be a Restorers website that you might check out.

Kat I think your best bet would be to contact a HVAC (heating, ventilation and Air Conditining shop) or sheet metal shop in your area. They do fabrication and could measure up and build you new ones and probably much cheaper than what you'd find online. These guys can build anything. I used to be married to one and I know they could do this no problem.

I have one. I think you can get replacement bins from Lehman's non electric catalog.
My flour bin is stainless steel and has a flour sifter attached to the bottom.

Love it!

I have one. When they were going to tear my Grandma's house down, I went to see it to say goodbye. While there, I noticed there was a cabinet built into the wall. It had been there my whole life, but I honestly had never noticed it. Anyway, as I looked at it, I sang to me, "Sherone, I'm a hoosier. Please save me!" I asked if I could have it and my uncle said ok. It has been painted several times. I would love to refinish it someday.

I keep debating with this cabinet. We've bought a house and there just isn't a good place to put it. I love the cabinet and it took me forever to get one but I don't know where to go with this one. Part of the problem is that we are putting a wood stove in and the room it is going to is where the cabinet is currently. With the cabinet in there it makes the room too small. It is my dining room and also where I have my desk. And then we are adding the stove. I'm going to have to do some serious furniture re-arranging.

Denise, I love the idea of having a stainless flour bin! I'll have to look into that. I just need to figure out where to go with the dang thing.

I love hearing about other cabinets. I would love it if this cabinet had belonged a grandma or aunt of mine. Sadly it did not. My mom won't give up hers that my dad built either. Don't blame her there. :) I wish mine could talk and tell me the stories of the families it has provided for. I'd love to hear about the women that used to stand there and knead their bread and make their dinners there. I love antiques. I always imagine stories that go with them. You know they may not be exciting stories but they mean something to someone somewhere.

Katrina,

Think outside the box. I use mine in my bathroom for linen storage. Yes, a weerd place, but a topic of conversation at every party. *LOL*

Sherone,
What an awesome idea! Wish my bathroom were bigger because mine is in the dining room and it is a bit crowded in there. I had it in the pantry but when we redid that area it had to come out. I hate to think of getting rid of mine. Right now it houses my baking supplies

I like the bathroom idea but I'm with Denise in that mine isn't big enough. I may just have to get creative about how my dining room is arranged. :)

I redid my grandma's, with my husband. It was a lot of work, but is my pride and joy. Let me see if I can figure out how to post a picture. I bought my roll-top tambour from van dyke's restoration, which is a mail order place.

Oh poo...it says "choose file" but won't let me. Maybe I will figure it out.
