If you have been using homemade toothpaste (long term), how have your dental check up's been?

We are finally at a point of no cavities, but would like to try homemade toothpaste.

Any updates on this?

I love my toothpaste. My mouth feels awesome and my teeth actually feel clean. As far as dental checkups, I don't go to the dentist so I can't say.

I would sure like to know how to make my own toothpaste.
I went to a medical conference last weekend and found out that toothpaste has anti-freeze in it. Really? what could we possibly need anti-freeze in our toothpaste for? I guess so it won't freeze...? I'm all for homemade! My family has tried to avoid fluoride toothpaste for many years and we are pretty much cavity free. The only problems we've had with cavities has been due to not flossing enough. I don't think homemade toothpaste would cause you to have more cavities unless you were putting sugar in it,lol!

I don't use toothpaste at all, and I've been cavity free for fifteen years. I brush and floss daily, and rinse my mouth with Listerine. That's it. I would think that homemade toothpaste will get you the same results.

If you look at my site, I have a post on there with the recipe I use for my toothpaste. I've tweaked it some since the first batch--this time I added some sage and cinnamon to it and it is AWESOME!!!

No problem. Looks like I will be going to see the dentist in January (already dreading it)as I want to see about getting my mercury fillings yanked and replaced. So I'll try to remember (key phrase here) and let you know what he says about my teeth.

Hi--
My dentist hygenist told me toothpaste is not necessary, that just brushing with water and rinsing with a mouthwash is fine. She also said that most people use way too much. She said a tiny drop the size of a pea is plenty to brush with. She did warn not to scrub sideways but up and down and to be careful in using too much baking soda as it is very abrasive. She rather I just use water since I am allergic to many items in toothpaste and mouthwash. She told me I could try to just brush my teeth with a bit of diluted hydrogen peroxide if I wanted to have my teeth whiter. Then rinse and floss well. I'm thinking watered down vodka or tequila to rinse with has the alcohol properties to kill bacteria. (no swallowing!) I am allergic to the mint and peppermint extracts. Then rinse with water and you are good to go. I also saw a special when I was in Germany and eating raw carrots during the day proved to keep the gums and teeth healthy, but you do need to brush because of sugars in foods.
Take care now,
Annie

Here's how I make my toothpaste:
I mix together---baking soda, peroxide, tea tree essential oil, and peppermint essential oil. Put it all in a small glass jar & mix it up.
I don't want to use floride, and when the 'Mart' was out of Tom's toothpaste, I just made my own. Much cheaper, too.

We just made some with tea tree oil and peppermint. It will take some getting used to, but so much cheaper for our large family. Thank you all for your help.

Tea tree oil has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties (as well as peppermint oil) and it is also useful for tooth/gum pain.

Just make sure you don't swallow tea tree oil. Not supposed to ingest it.
I just made the best moisterizer from organic coconut oil (that I bought to cook with) mixed with a little tea tree oil. It has made my very dry feet, hands and face (winter!!!) much better. I love coconut oil!

I just made some toothpaste today and I LOVE it! I used spearmint and peppermint EO. Even my grand daughter likes it. Ilove how it makes my mough feel and I still have the minty freshness going on after a few hours after brushing. Thanks a lot! I'm so glad I read this here. Makes me feel so much better now. I was just using baking soda.

I don't want to use flouride, I have thyroid disease. I use a tiny bit of baking soda and peroxide. I also rinse my mouth with a1 part water ans 1/2 part part peroxide. I rinse my brush with peroxide every time I use it. When I do have something sweet, I rinse out my mouth right after. Don't forget to brush your tongue.

So, I went to the dentist the other day. I have some dental issues that need dealing with--for example my bleeding gums. He said that was due to not having my teeth professionally cleaned primarily. So I had a deep clean done. I also bought a sonicare toothbrush while there (highly recommended) and he gave me some heavy duty mouth wash to use to help with the inflammation in my gums. He didn't say anything about toothpaste to me. I follow up in a couple of weeks to see how my mouth is looking (and go back after that to have my fillings replaced) so I'll let you know what he says. However, since having my teeth deep cleaned (which made my mouth super sore) I have not had 1 drop of blood from my gums with flossing or brushing. I LOVE my new toothbrush, it feels really good on my gums. My mouth feels super clean, no bleeding and I will continue to use my homemade toothpaste. I'll post an update (if I don't forget) after I go in for my follow up and let you know how my mouth is. AND...the problems with my mouth were mainly with my gums, not so much my teeth, as he didn't really say much about them--guess that's a good thing.
