Remember the colour wheel. The colours across from each other are contrasting colours: red/green orange/blue yellow/violet and all points in between. The same is true with the tints, shades and tones. Mix it up by doing burgundy with olive, orange-yellow with light blue or light green with lavender. You might even find a new colour to love.

I know I know that in theory, but in practice I still pick the (analagous?) color scheme, like greens, blues, and purples, because it's pretty!
