1/4/2016 Neologism [nee-ol-uh-jiz-uhm] is an old term (c. 1790) that means a new one. Properly defined, it refers to “a newly coined word or expression.”

Building momentum within this mounting rhetorical revolution, lexicographer Erin McKean is reshaping how we interact with language. In her talk from TEDYouth, below, McKean emboldens us to embrace our neologistic urges. See Erin’s talk on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1n0gIiG

1/5/2016 Doy-gee!

While this may sound like some sort of neologism meant to convey, say, surprise or delight, it is actually the pronunciation of: Duodji.

Oh, gee … Don’t worry if you’re coming up empty on definitions because duodji isn’t an English word–not even close. It actually hails from a remote group of nomadic people called the Sámi who herd reindeer across the far northern reaches of Scandinavia … http://bit.ly/1VFHKrd

1/6/2016 This star-spangled songstress is an icon of down-home Americana.

While you know her signature style and warbling voice, though, you may not know that Dolly Parton is a longtime champion of children’s literacy … http://bit.ly/1PNWYdh

1/9/2016For this week’s Young Cultivator Make it Easy/Music Intermediate Level Merit Badge, Piper and I picked up right where we had left off with the Beginner Level badge.

Right between the knowledge that neither of us had any rhythm to speak of, and the knowledge that we were both kinda dismal at … how should I put it? … Music Appreciation Arts.

Let’s just say, you don’t want us in your philharmonic … http://bit.ly/1mNkWd4

1/10/2016 House for sale by horse:

It’s true, Willie Neighson, the horse, is the unusual realtor on this farm for sale.

Willie says, “I’m not a hero … I just want to help my current owners move closer to their kids. I’m just like you. I put my shoes on one hoof at a time.” http://bit.ly/22TTWcP

1/12/2016 For this week’s Each Other/Farmgirl Gratitude Expert Level Merit Badge, I expressed my very own Farmgirl Gratitude, open-letter style.

I wanted to hold up some large pieces of white paper with poetical and important words in permanent marker, or maybe pour some ice on my head or something, but I figured, hey, a good, old-fashioned letter is the way to go, Jo … http://bit.ly/1mTa4u5

1/13/2016 In Scotland, the first person to enter your house after midnight on New Year’s Eve is called a “first-foot” or “first-footer.” And if that person is tall, dark, and handsome … well, lucky you … in more ways than one! http://bit.ly/1PXPNNX

1/14/2016 Who doesn’t love to hang laundry on the line? Crisp, white linens softly swaying in the breeze, capturing the smell of a summer’s day. Merely a daydream on a day like today: mid-winter, temperature gauge barely above freezing, a frozen clothesline covered in snow. Spring is still down the road a ways, but you’ll be ready to hang your cares out to dry if you’re the lucky winner of this beautiful cotton clothespin bag.

Enter to win on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1ORzza0

1/16/2016 (MBA Jane) For this week’s Young Cultivator Stitching and Crafting/All Tied Up Beginner Level Merit Badge, I spent some time with Nora, my ever-lovin’ and ever-talkative neighbor girl. She’s the artistic type (I can tell this by the mood swings and the way she dresses … very eccentric), so I knew she’d be perfectly swell for this particular badge.

For Nora to earn her Beginner Level badge, all we had to do was whip up a smock … http://bit.ly/206IgRy

1/18/2016 You may remember how I told you about Zentangle, the addictive art of zany (yet so very Zen) doodling.

True to form, each time I swirl and squiggle lines on paper, I find myself fantasizing about fabric, which inspired me to poke around a bit into the idea of Zentangle quilting, and wouldn’t you know it?

It’s a real thing. And it’s just as neat-o as I’d imagined … http://bit.ly/1lnXNgc

1/19/2016 (MBA Jane) For this week’s Beginner Level Stitching and Crafting/Dyeing for Color Merit Badge, I was already a bit of an expert. 1/23/2016 For this week’s Make It Easy/Do Your Eyes Light Up? Beginner Level Young Cultivator Merit Badge, I once again visited my go-to, would-be, wanna-be, newbie farmgirl sister (or as she would say, sistah), Piper. I was just as thrilled with this badge earning as she was—maybe a smidgeon more even—and we got to work ASAP (As Soon As Piper … fixed her hair, ate breakfast, checked her social media, watched an episode of something or other, ate a snack, sent several text messages, and fixed her hair again).

In order for Pipes to earn her Beginner Level badge, she needed to learn a few things from Yours Truly, aka Jane the Brain … http://bit.ly/1Ql54bR

1/24/2016 I’ve arranged a unique world tour that’s just perfect for the quilt-wrapped armchair travelista who is perfectly happy in her current state of snuggling.
Today’s tour takes us to 13 mountains and ranges around the world that are known by the name (or nickname) “Sleeping Lady.”
Enjoy trying to decipher how each one got her name (some are more obvious than others) … http://bit.ly/1nhwPrV

1/27/2016 Period Panties.
