My parents have both passed away and it is time to sell their small farm (14+ acres) and Victorian home. It is located in Laurens, NY. It sits in a lovely rural spot, yet close to many conveniences. We hope that there is someone out there looking for just such a terrific property and I'd like to tell you a little about it. This farm is an excellent and exciting choice for a homestead, craft brewery, organic produce farm, or other home based business. The house has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, an extra kitchen with floor to ceiling built in cabinets, an amazing amount of storage for an old (1880) home (6 lighted, walk-in closets), and gorgeous woodwork throughout. There is a 2 1/2story barn, chicken house and detached garage. There are 70 blueberry bushes - fenced with netting that yield about 200 quarts a year, the land and buildings have been well maintained. There is a stream on the property.

Interestingly, wild hops grow abundantly on the property - AND - there is a great need in NYS for more hops growers. There is a large new brewery going in Oneonta, and a hops processing plant is in the works. This could be a great opportunity for the right person or family. We've been told that a 5 acre fully mature planting of hops could yield a $50,000 income per year. There is room for this, as well as much more on this excellent property. The link below will take you to more information. We are not listed with a realtor, but are hoping to find the right family on our own.

If you'd like to make an appointment to see it, or just to ask more questions, please call Margaret at 607-432-8063.

Oh, BARBARA! First, let me say how sorry I am for your loss. So hard. And letting go of a family treasure such as their home and farm must be very, very difficult. Having said that, though, I think I've just seen my dream farm!!! What I wouldn't give to be able to relocate and start a new life there... We were upstate New York last fall and I fell in love, absolute love. But I think I could live a little further south and be quite happy. If only... If only... Thank you for telling us about your parents' beautiful home and farm. I pray that the perfect family will move in and be able to honor their hopes, dreams, and hard work... and the love they built there! God bless - I wish you the best! Hugs - Nini

Hi Barbara - I am so sorry for the loss of your parents. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to have to sell their home.

I actually know where Laurens is. I graduated SUNY Oneonta a long time ago but I imagine and hope it hasn't changed all that much so I wanted to offer a testimonial that Otsego County is absolutely gorgeous and rural and the kind of place any true Farmgirl would love. Your parents home is beautiful. If my life circumstances were different, I'd want it for myself.

Best wishes to you in finding the right family that will love and preserve your parents' farm.

Thank you Ninibini and RabbitGirl for your kind words and especially prayers that the right family will see this post. The farm is indeed a special place, and holds many sweet memories of good family times.

We are certain that there is someone or a family that will love and care for the property and make a living and a life there. We all do appreciate so much your spreading the word to anyone you know who is looking for a place like this and helping us to find them.

Barbara,
I would love to note your write-up in a couple of other places. Would that be okay?

Barbara -
I'm so sorry about the loss of both your parents, and your difficult decision to sell their beautiful farm. I am happy you found the MaryJanes Farm chatroom and posted your story. This sounds like the most perfect place for a farmgirl on this forum who has been looking for a place for her family to settle. Good luck on the sale of this farm. And as said before, please keep us posted.

Farmgirl hugs,

Hello again everyone,

We have reduced the price of the farm by $5000 now to $234,000. We have only had one inquiry since we took over trying to sell by owner, and that was from a person interested in turning the barn into a wedding venue. It would be such a wonderful site for something like that, but I think that person wanted to be able to seat as may as 250 - 300 guests indoors, and the barn is about 30' by 50', and 2 1/2 stories. The barn is very well constructed, so could totally be adapted into alternative uses like a winery or craft brewery, antique shop, etc. We could even throw in some antique farm implements for the right family. There are some really interesting tools that my dad collected over the years, just because he appreciated the old ways of doing things, even though as a dairy farmer he did modernize and ran a profitable dairy business until he retired.

Please spread the word to anyone and everyone you know who might have an interest in such a great property and the opportunity, within a few miles of a small college town to establish a homestead/farm and/or a small business.

The extra kitchen is just as you enter the house from the back door and we think it could easily be a beauty shop,or an office for most any kind of home based business, and customers or clients would not need to enter the main living area. That room has floor to ceiling cabinets along two walls of the room, recently repainted, that could be great for business storage.

Blessings to you all for a wonderful week ahead.

Dear Barabra, I am new to Mary Jane's sisterhood and all of this website. In fact I am new to rural living, recently moved from Phoenix, my life long home and birthplace, to rural Arkansas. I saw Mary Jane's post about your little farm for sale and it touched my heart. Especially your story about the place and your family. To say I went bonkers is putting it mildly. I read the blog post over and over, found more photos of your place on a real estate website, studied maps, looked up the Oneonta town webpage. You name it, I was all over it. My new husband (we are both 60-ish and retired) and I have only been in Arkansas (his birthplace) 22 months and I was hesitant to bring up another move. At the same time, I thought of my daughter and her man, not yet settled into permanent careers, and the light bulbs were going ON, big time! I will admit to being something of a dreamer, but I had it all worked out how the four of us would live there. Ahem. I am working on letting go of this current dream of mine, as unfortunately it is solely mine. The charming farmhouse is not really suitable for two couples full time, the timing is just not right for them anyway. But, oh, I saw the possibilities so very clearly! I could go on but you get the idea I'm sure. I will be very happy for you when the right family comes along and I will be sad that my notions to be allowed to live there and love it will be dashed. Best hugs and wishes to you.

Joan

Hi Joan, thanks so much for your post. I enjoyed reading it and could feel the excitement you must have experienced as you considered the possibilities for this great place. We are fervently praying that the right family will find out about the farm soon and be able to move right in, making it their home.

My siblings and I have a cousin who lives in Arkansas, though we have never visited there.

Welcome to MJ Sisterhood and rural living. I was fortunate to grow up on a dairy farm, with parents who taught us well how to do so many things from planting trees, to raising chickens for meat and eggs, and household production of just about all we needed. We put up hundreds of mason jars of food for the winter and had beets and carrots in kegs in the cellar to fetch all winter for our suppers.

This homesteading way of life is even more meaningful as a chosen lifestyle today since our culture has evolved so much in an opposite direction. I applaud your decision to make such a dramatic change, and wish you well as you adapt to the very different ways of doing things.

Some of you asked for updates on our situation, so thought I would just check in and let you know that we still have not had any serious offers, or even lookers at the wonderful little farm that my parents loved so much. We have contracted with a lead abatement specialist to paint all the house trim and shutters, and we've upgraded the septic system. We've (my four siblings and I) been trying to sell it on our own, but thinking that in the spring we would interview realtors and select one we believe will work hard at finding a buyer. We expect the asking price will be considerably higher by then as the realtor will have a percent.
It would be great if we could sell it before winter, but it begins to look like that won't happen. It's a good investment opportunity, and we'd appreciate your good thoughts and prayers for the right person to find out about this little gem of a homestead farm in Laurens, NY.

Barbara, the farm/land sounds beautiful. The right person is out there. The right person that will love it as much as your parents and family did. Hang in there. We'll all keep praying. God will bring the opportunity and person.
