This will be my first garden setup. I already have seed books and looking to what I want to grow for our harvest. I also need flowers for the yard and other areas around this place. So many choices and I am over whelmed and don't know where to start. I have about 5 acres that I could plant, but will probably only plant about 1 acre this year. I am planning on adding to my fruit orchid.

May the stars carry your sadness away. May the flowers fill your heart with beauty, and may hope forever wipe away your tears.

Becky what fun to plan your new gardens. As you get to know your new home and acreage you will know what goes here and what to plant there. After being in my home for five years I am still having to adjust to growing trees and more shade.

Becky, I love your enthusiasm. I haven't even thought about what to plant next year. Just remember that you should have a small variety of things that grow well in Maine. Check your weather and decide. Good luck and happy planning!

I checked out Baker Seeds and came away with 3 dwarf banana trees. They will be delivered in April.

You may ask how does a somewhat sensible woman do that. Well, I have a little story that will explain it. The blue house is on my sister's and mine way home from making a whiskey run and Kelly's fruit & veg stand. It's a craftsman style wood house on a double corner lot. We first started noticing the two 3-4' metal hanging baskets under the huge oak tree. They have a pulley system to lower & raise the baskets.

Viewing of the hanging baskets led to us driving down the side street so we could see more and we did. The back yard is divided into what I call outdoor rooms. The first is a small lawn with a few plants. Next is the fish pond and covered patio. And several tall banana trees in containers. Up to then I never knew banana trees would grow in Paris.

Next there is a small garden plot and a hen house with five chickens of different breeds. The chickens are moved around the different fenced areas. I love looking at that yard - so many ideas. It's a wonder we haven't been arrested for stalking since we drive so slow pass it and sometimes we actually stop like the day we first saw the banana trees. My sister wants one of the banana trees so that leaves two for me to pot.

Sara' I am so glad you get to try bananas. Such fun. We grew an orange tree inside for 20 years. The last year before it croaked we had 30 oranges. Such fun to be able to eat that kind of fruit in Minnesota. Delicious.

Connie- My Baker came first, did you not get yours yet??

Someday we hope to grow a few citrus trees inside a wood-heated greenhouse. It will be a while... ;)

Planning for the HUGE gardens (did you notice the plural) I will be putting at the farm this year is proving to be fun! Now caring for all 3, as well as the other planted areas, shall be interesting!! Right now I am "zoning" the land. I am working on a more Permaculture design for the land. Since I don't have a PDC (Permaculture Design Certificate), I am no expert!! Matt seems unhappy with the idea of planting a smaller garden in my zone 1, so gardens are in zone 2 and 3.... :/ I went through seeds to see what we had, too, recently. So now I have a pretty good idea of what I need to buy. Still, growing for a family of 5, for 60-75% of our food for the year is going to be interesting!

Anyone want to follow along, there is a section of my blog dedicated to my self-made challenge.

Alicia, I didn't get it and I ordered last year! I will have to check my hubby's magazine pile, sometimes he gets mine in with his and he is working 12 hour days so he is behind in his reading for sure! LOL!
I do love a Bush Sunflower that I get from Territorial, I kept the seeds and replanted the next year and got about 50% germinated!

That is awesome! I may try this newer small company for a few things this year; http://seedsforgenerations.com. They are a homeschool family in VA.

I got my Baker in Mid Dec, so I bet it is hiding out somewhere! ;)

Today I order ten herb plants from Mountain Valley to be deliver sometime in April.

Mexican Oregano
Greek Bay
Garden Sage
Clary Sage
Winter Savory
Russian Comfrey
Greek Oregano
Attar of Rose Scented Geranium
Peacock Scented Geranium
Rise and Shine Miniature Yellow Rose

In the past I made healing salves and oils. I want to get back to doing it again so several of the herbs I ordered are for medicinal purposes.

Just starting my garden planning. I had a terrible time with the drought and lost many of my perennials and vegetables. I actually had woodpeckers eating my tomatoes! I hope for a better growing season in 2017

Julie, I've been dealing with a long running drought too. My plants start off healthy in the spring but by the end of Aug most are spent. Because of the drought I treat some perennials as annuals and replant every year. Only the drought resisted plants survive year after year. Heirloom plants fair better than hybrids.

Received e-mail notice from Mountain Valley and my herbs will ship March 27 for 2-day delivery. Now I have a solid date to have pots and potting soil ready when they get here. I'm excited.

I no longer can manage large bags of potting soil so I buy the 8# bag of Miracle Grow from Dollar General. They're the only place in town who sell that size. When DG gets it in I will start stocking up. Have all the pots I need - just have to make sure they are clean.

One more thing I need to get done before they arrive is to make watering labels for each pot. On a plastic marker I put a big M for moist or D for dry. When I water I don't have to remember what the plant needs and I can read it without my glasses. Every little bit helps these days.

I've got the general layout for my garden planned. I want to figure out how many plants I need for each variety. Last year I started out great. Had all my plants started, but never got most of them into the ground (ended up spending a lot of time working on a chicken coop). This year the plants are GOING into the garden!
