The buckets have been out for a week. Has not run the best yet. Will cook tomorrow. Lots of snow. We use snowshoes to get through the woods.

Hopefully the run will pick up for you soon. Beautiful picture of your trees! Let us know how much syrup you end up with.

How much do you normally end up with each year?

Thanks everyone. Taps stay out till the season is over. It is over when the trees start budding. So roughly a month or more. It all depends on the weather. Trees finally ran yesterday. Went 2 days with no flow, cause it was too cold. We cook it down outside, with a wood fire. It will take all day to cook 60 or so gallons. Wood is split small and we use branches, to keep the fire hot, and keep the boil. This batch ran 31 gallons of sap to 1 gallon of syrup. You never know how much syrup you will end up with. All depends on the sap flow.

Michele... so awesome,,, and what most people don't know,, pure maple syrup has great quailities.... not just as a waffle topping...
The nearest pure maple syrup to us is from Canada. Depending on where you buy it, and the producer,,, it runs about $8 -14 for a small 8oz bottle.. but so worth it.
My poor hubby grew up on 'syrup' made from 'Kayro' syrup with a fake buttery taste... uugh, uugh and uugh! In my book, the only good thing Kayro is good for,,, is popcorn balls! lol!

Good earth minerals in the syrup. Grace did you convert your husband yet to the "real thing" ? Yes, krista we do hope for more. We have a few more days of too cold to run. We have about 40 gallons gathered up again. Another 20 and we will cook it down.

Hope you get those last 20 gallons Michele! It is amazing how much sap is needed for syrup. Nothing beats pure maple syrup!

I think this would be so fun to do. My grandfather made maple syrup here on this old farm back in the twenties and thirties. He made it into maple candy and took it to the general store to sell. Over the years I had many people tell me how much they looked forward to that candy when they were kids. I think it is great that you do this. The old sugar maples are still here, but they are in decline.

We just cooked our third batch yesterday. 8 gallons of syrup so far. been a very cold season, so it has not run well. And now this weekend they are predicting more snow. We have run 27 and 28 to one, so that is good. They use 40 to one as a general ratio. 40 gallons of sap to one gallon of syrup.

Wow! 8 gallons of syrup is awesome! I'm sorry to hear the weather hasn't been the best. Hopefully it turns around soon.
