Hi everyone,
I have a question. I have a cedar chest/hope chest that was my great auntie's. It was a wedding present for when she was 17 back in 1916. I don't have a picture of it. Right now it is a little buried under boxes as we are downsizing and packing for our move next March.
Well my question is: what should I do with it. It is a bit beat up after being around 102 years. Some molding is gone and some areas are peeling. I would like to restore it but I fear I may ruin the value. I think it wouldn't matter though as I don't have any intention to sell it.

Nancy, I think your asssessment is spot on. Since you wish to keep it and it needs some love and attention, I agree with you that you should repair it for generations to come and make it useable again. Don't you think your Aunt would want the same for you? I do.

I think you should restore it too. I have refinished many old pieces and I enjoy them even though they are far from perfect. I suppose you maen the varnish is peeling---that should be very easy to strip off and redo. I have stripped things with four coats of paint on them and that was no fun. Let us know how it comes out.

Thanks Winnie and Theresa,
I think it will be my first project after I move to my new home in a new state. The inside is in perfect condition. The outside needs a few pieces of trim and molding which Hubby can make for me. A bit of sanding and some feet will do the trick. Here is a pix of the old timey key that I thought I had lost but found while going through a bunch of things in boxes in storage. Wow what an ordeal to pack a house that has been lived in for 30yrs.

Now that is one cool key!! Yes, post a photo when you have had time to make your repairs. I hope it all turns out smoothly for you too!!

Nancy,, 'moving' , whether it's to a different neighborhood or different State,, is a challenge and a joy,,,not to mention a teasure hunt!
30 years in your home, I'll bet you are finding 'lost' things that bring a smile or laugh or tear to you...
When hubby and I moved back here last year, we both swore that this would be our last move... but something tells me,, 'Never say Never'...lol!
After traveling thround Oregon Wilamatte (sp) Valley as well as Bend and the Deschutes area,,, we might re-think ...especially once the Grand-kiddos graduate from High School in 9 years!
What can I say,, I have Gypsy in my blood...
As for your Aunties Hope Chest,, do what ever makes you happy... How blessed you are to have a memory from her.

I feel for you having to pack up to move. We have lived in our house 54 years. Hope I don't have to move anytime soon.

We live in the Burbs on .15 acre. A little too close to the neighbors. Can't have chicken or goats. First thing I want to do when we move into our next home is plant fruit trees. We are hoping to find a lot about 5 to 10 acres. Our family doesn't get it but Hubby and I are Country. We have been itchin for land ever since we moved to SW Riverside County. Even though our yard is small, seven houses down the street was acres of open field. Our dogs loved it.
Now it is covered by hundreds of townhomes. We have to drive our dogs to open spaces so they can have fun. So even though moving is tough it will be a great reward. We already found a church we love in the area we want to live. If you already have your dream home you are blessed. 54 years is a long time and I will bet a lot of good memories :)
